Ironic Approach to the American Dream in the Life and Work of Hunter S. Thompson

Abstract:

Práce představuje čtenáři život a dílo amerického žurnalisty Huntera S. Thompsona a ukazuje postoj, který Thompson zaujímá vůči americkému snu. Práce je rozdělena do třech samostatných částí. První část, zabývající se Thompsonovým životem, poukazuje na události, jejichž svědkem Thompson byl, a na další vlivy, které se projevily při formování Thompsonova životního postoje. Druhá část zařazuje Thompsona do kontextu autorů Nového žurnalismu, což byl v té době nový literární směr, a vymezuje jeho Gonzo žurnalismus, originální styl psaní, který Thompson na základě Nového žurnalismu uvedl do literatury. Poslední část práce popisuje koncept amerického snu a na příkladu jeho jednotlivých aspektů ukazuje způsob, jakým ho Thompson kritizuje ve svém díle. Ukazuje, že nejpřirozenější cestou pro kritizování je pro Thompsona ironie a sarkasmus.

Abstract:

The thesis introduces the reader into the life and work of an American journalist Hunter S. Thompson and it shows Thompson’s attitude towards the American Dream. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first one, which deals with Thompson’s life, depicts the events he was involved in and other influences that shaped his point of view. The second one puts Thompson in the context of the authors of the New Journalism which was the literary trend of the time and defines his Gonzo Journalism, original writing style he invented. The last part describes the concept of the American Dream and on the example of its individual aspects describes the way Thompson criticizes it in his writings. It shows that in order to criticize it, Thompson uses the irony and sarcasm which seems to be the most natural way for him.
