Czech parents seen by the concept of digital immigrants

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá používáním digitálních médií rodiči a vztahy v rodině. Cílem práce je zjistit, jakým způsobem se běžný rodič vyrovnává s používáním počítače a internetu a zda jsou rodinné vztahy mezi rodičem a dítětem ovlivňovány skutečností, že dítě disponuje často většími znalostmi a dovednostmi v ovládání digitálních médií. Na problematiku je nahlíženo primárně skrze optiku konceptu digitálních domorodců a digitálních imigrantů, kombinujícího generační rozdíly a s nimi spojené návyky a otázku počítačové gramotnosti. Hlavní částí práce je kvalitativní výzkum, který probíhal formou polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s deseti respondenty. Získaná data byla analyzována za pomoci metody zakotvené teorie. Z analýzy dat vyplynulo, že rodiče vnímají počítače jako cizí médium, které jim není blízké a jehož používání považují především za nutnost. Vnímají i jistý dopad v rámci vztahů se svými dětmi, považují jej však spíše za pozitivní, přestože si jsou schopni představit i negativní účinky, avšak obecně nepřikládají takovýmto změnám velikou důležitost.

Abstract:

This work deals with the use of digital media by parents and family relationships. The goal is to find out how parents cope with the use of computers and the Internet, and whether the family relationship between parents and child are affected by the fact that child often has greater knowledge and skills in handling digital media. The issue is seen primarily through the lens of the concept of digital natives and digital immigrants, combining generational differences, and associated habits and the question of computer literacy. The main part consists of qualitative research, which was conducted through interviews with ten respondents. Obtained data were analyzed using grounded theory. The data analysis showed that parents perceive computers as a foreign media that they are not close to, and they use it mainly only when necessary. They see some impact in the context of relations with their children, but rather consider it as positive, although they are able to imagine the negative effects, but generally do not attach great importance to such changes.
