Grain-size control of sedimentary-geological features of glaciofluvial sediments: case study from the Kolnovice site

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the research of Quaternary glacifluvial sediments from the Kolnovice sandpit, which represents a glacifluvial outwash plain. Quaternary, paleogeography and stratigraphy of continental glaciation, and discription of glacial sediments are presented in the theoretical part. In the next part, this thesis informs about the locality of the sandpit and geomorphological and geological features. Further attention is devoted to petrological composition of the sediments enricheds by erratic clasts. The methods of the thesis involve grain-size and clast litological analysis which means analysis of clast petrology and provenance, together with clast shape and roundness analyses.The results show petrological and provenance differences between the size fractions, where the dominance of the local clasts was identified. Based on the results of clast shape and roundness analyses we can assume that the sediments of the studied sandpit represent a mixture of elder alluvial, fluvial and possibly colluvial sediments, which were subsequently eroded by the ice sheet and involved in glacifluvial processes during the deglaciation.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa zaoberá výskumom kvartérnych glacifluviálnych sedimentov na území pieskovne Kolnovice, ktorá predstavuje glacifluviálnu výplavovú plošinu. V teoretickej časti je opísané obdobie kvartéru, paleogeografia a stratigrafia kontinentálneho zaľadnenia a rozdelenie ľadovcových sedimentov. V ďalšej časti predložená práca podáva informácie o samotnej lokalite pieskovne, jej geomorfologické a geologické pomery. Podrobnejšie sa venuje petrologickému zloženiu sedimentov tejto lokality, ktorá je obohatená o ľadovcové souvky. Ďalej popisuje metodiku práce zahrňujúcu zrnitostnú a okruhliakovú analýzu. V rámci druhej menovanej ide o petrologický rozbor, tvarovú analýzu, analýzu zaoblenia a kovariančnú analýzu. Vo výsledkoch sú porovnávané jednotlivé provenienčné a petrologické skupiny v študovaných zrnitostných frakciách, kde bola zistená dominancia miestnych hornín. Z tvarov a zaoblenia klastov vyplýva, že sedimenty pieskovne sú tvorené zmesou starších aluviálnych, fluviálnych a prípadne koluviálnych uloženín. Tieto boli následne erodované ľadovcom a pri deglaciácii zapojené do glacifluviálnych procesov.
