Review of the Relationship between Religion and Death Anxiety

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá výzkumem vztahu mezi úzkostí ze smrti a náboženstvím. V současné době je toto téma studováno zejména v psychologii. V analýze dvaceti osmi studií je vytvářena typologie výzkumných otázek a hypotéz, jsou zde zhodnoceny metody použité k měření úzkosti ze smrti a náboženství či religiozity, a pozornost je také věnována teoretickým východiskům a problematice interpretací výsledků jednotlivých výzkumů. Celá oblast výzkumu se potýká s problémem převažující dotazníkové metody pro sběr dat, s nedostatkem teoretického ukotvení a s nedostatkem replikačních studií, které by pomohly ověřit výsledky, k nimž výzkumy docházejí. Studie nejčastěji dochází k tomu, že náboženství buďto zvyšuje nebo snižuje úzkost ze smrti, že úzkost ze smrti zvyšuje religiozitu, nebo že náboženství není s úzkostí ze smrti v žádném vztahu. Do dnešního dne tedy z výzkumu vyplývá dosud nejasný kauzální vztah a nejasný zůstává i v nejčastěji prezentovaném výsledku o vyšší religiozitě snižující úzkost ze smrti. V závěru práce navrhuji výzkum s experimentálním designem, který si klade otázku, jestli ritualizovaný pohyb vede za pomocí endorfinové reakce ke snížení úzkosti ze smrti lépe než pouhé synchronizované, či asynchronní pohyby.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with research on the relationship between death anxiety and religion. Currently, a psychological approach is the prevalent research approach in this field of research. In the analysis of twenty-eight studies, I lay out the typology of research questions and hypotheses, review the methods used to measure death anxiety and religion or religiosity, and pay attention to the theoretical background of the studies, as well as to the issues of interpretation of the results. The research of this topic suffers from the overuse of the questionnaire method for data collection, the lack of theoretical anchoring, and the lack of replications which would help with the confirmation of the results. The study most commonly shows that religion either increases or decreases death anxiety, that death anxiety increases religiosity, or that religion is not related to death anxiety. So far, the research has shown an as yet unclear causal relationship and remains unclear even in the most frequently presented outcome of higher religiosity reducing death anxiety. In conclusion, the thesis offers possible future direction for the experimental research which should help to test whether ritualized movement leads to a higher decrease in death anxiety compared with synchronous or asynchronous movement.
