Presence of Idioms in English Coursebooks for Lower-Secondary Schools and Adult Beginners: Coursebook Analysis

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá porovnáváním a analýzou idiomů vyskytujících se v učebnicích angličtiny pro studenty na druhém stupni základních škol a v učebnicích pro dospělé začátečníky. Cílem této bakalářské práce je najít a zkoumat nejčastější idiomy, jejich užití ve cvičeních a rozdíl jejich výskytu v učebnicích pro mladistvé a dospělé na stejné úrovni anglického jazyka. Nejprve je nahlédnuto do lingvistické analýzy idiomů a všeobecného rozdělení řečových dovedností, poté se práce zabývá významem korpusu a jeho možným využitím pro učitele. Druhá, praktická část se věnuje didaktickému přístupu k idiomům, tj. způsob, jakým jsou idiomy prezentovány a procvičovány v učebnicích a jejich přítomnost v aktivitách zaměřených na rozvoj různých řečových dovedností. Nakonec je v této bakalářské práci porovnána frekvence výskytu nalezených idiomů mezi učebnicemi a korpusem.

Abstract:

This paper deals with a comparison and analysis of idioms occurring in English students' books designed for students at lower-secondary schools and for adult beginners. The aim of the thesis is to search for and examine the most common idioms, their usage in exercises and the difference between their presence in students' books for teenagers and adults at the same level of their language skills. Firstly, the linguistic analysis of idioms and general division of language skills is looked into, secondly, the thesis is concerned with the importance of a corpus and its possible utilisation for teachers. The second, practical part of the thesis focuses on the didactic aspect, i.e. the way idioms are presented and practiced in coursebooks and their presence in exercises aimed at different language skills. Finally, this paper compares the frequency of occurrence of idioms as found in the selected coursebooks and corpora.
