Current specific problems in ensuring adequate protection of the lens of the eye in nuclear medicine

Abstract:

Zajištění adekvátní ochrany oční čočky před nežádoucími vlivy ionizujícího záření je důležitým úkolem radiační ochrany na každém pracovišti se zdroji ionizujícího záření. Na přelomu tisíciletí se ukázalo, že oční čočka je více radiosenzitivní, než se do té doby předpokládalo. Došlo ke klinickým případům vzniku katarakty oční čočky s funkčním postižením zraku. Na mezinárodní úrovni byla formulována doporučení k zajištění lepší ochrany oční čočky a stanoveny nižší limity jejího ozáření. V návaznosti na tato opatření byla v předložené práci provedena důkladná analýza současného stavu problematiky radiační ochrany oční čočky při aplikaci radiofarmak na pracovištích nukleární medicíny s ohledem na možnost potenciálního ozáření oční čočky a na vybraném pracovišti PET/CT bylo provedeno monitorování relevantních veličin.

Abstract:

Ensuring adequate protection of the lens of the eye from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation is an important task of radiation protection in any workplace dealing with ionizing radiation sources. At the turn of the millennium, the lens of the eye proved to be more radiosensitive than was previously thought. There have been clinical cases of cataracts of the lens with functional visual impairment. At the international level, recommendations have been formulated to ensure better protection for the lens of the eye and lower limits on its exposure were set. In connection with these measures, a thorough analysis of the current state of radiation protection of the lens of the eye during the application of radiopharmaceuticals in a nuclear medicine department was performed in the presented work with regard to the possibility of potential irradiation of the lens of the eye. Monitoring of relevant quantities was performed at the selected PET/CT department.
