The Problem of Mimesis in Animation

Abstract:

Diplomová bakalářská práce Problém mimésis v animaci pojednává o základní problematice nápodoby spojené s animací. Snaží se ukázat, jakými prostředky animace dosahuje nápodoby. Problematika nápodoby je řešena pomocí tří estetických pojmů – mimésis, metafory a stylizace. Zmíněné pojmy jsou důležitými estetickými figurami, se kterými animace pracuje. Tato práce vysvětluje výše zmíněné pojmy a ukazuje, jak jsou chápány v souvislosti s animací. Hlavní otázku, kterou si tato práce klade je, jak animace napodobuje realitu. Animace je schopna zaznamenávat realitu, avšak tato nápodoba je metaforická a stylizovaná. Problematika je řešena na příkladu kreslené a loutkové animace. Teoretické problémy jsou aplikovány na filmy Walta Disneyho a Jiřího Trnky, kteří jsou dobrými zástupci výše zmíněných typů animace.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis called The Problem of Mimesis in Animation deals with the basic problems connected with the issue of imitation in animation. It presents the means of imitation by which animation achieves it. The issue of imitation is solved using three aesthetic terms – mimesis, metaphor and stylization. These terms are very important aesthetic ideas which animation works with. This thesis explains the terms mentioned above and shows the way of understanding them in connection with animation. The main question of this bachelor thesis is how animation imitates the reality. Even though animation is able to record the reality, the recording is always metaphorical and stylised. The problem is illustrated on the example of cartoons and puppet animation. Furthermore, the theoretical problems are applied to the films of Walt Disney and Jiří Trnka, who are appropriate representatives of the types of animation mentioned above.
