The mixing of British and American English by Czech students of English and the impact of free-time activities on their use of English

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the differences between British and American English and on the way these two varieties are used by Czech students of English. While the theoretical part deals with particular differences between the two dialects in individual language areas, the analytical part studies to what extent the Czech students of English mix the two English alternatives, and the impact of their free-time activities on this. To explore this, qualitative research was conducted at a secondary school and a university. The research was based on a test that investigated the degree of mixing and a questionnaire that aimed to ascertain which free time activities of the students influenced their preferences the most. The study revealed that the secondary school students prefer American English, whereas the university students mostly opt for British English. The performance of both groups of students is chieflyinfluenced by watching English YouTube channels, movies and series.

Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o přístupu českých studentů k rozdílům mezi britskou a americkou angličtinou. Zatímco teoretická část této práce popisuje rozdíly mezi těmito dvěma dialekty v jednotlivých jazykových rovinách, analýza zkoumá úroveň míšení těchto variant mezi českými studenty a také mimoškolní aktivity studentů, které míšení ovlivňují. Výsledek byl dosažen provedením kvalitativního výzkumu na střední škole a univerzitě. Studie byla založena na testu, který odhalil míru míšení mezi jednotlivými studenty, a také na dotazníku, který pomohl objasnit, které mimoškolní aktivity nejvíce ovlivnily upřednostnění jednoho ekvivalentu nad druhým. Analýza ukázala, že středoškolští studenti preferují americkou angličtinu, zatímco univerzitní studenti ve většině inklinují k britské angličtině. Výsledky poukazují, že projev obou skupin studentů je ovlivněn především sledováním anglicky mluvících YouTube kanálů, filmů, a seriálů.
