Similarity measurement of spiders and ants

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá segmentací obrazů, na kterých jsou zobrazeni pavouci a mravenci ve standardizované poloze, a získáním popisných charakteristik z těchto obrazů určených pro měření podobnosti mezi oběma druhy. Měření podobnosti je určeno pro výzkum schopnosti pavouků napodobit mravence, kteří se tak chrání před svými predátory. V práci jsou popsány obecné segmentační metody vhodné pro tento typ problému. Dále je zde popsán konkrétní postup segmentace navržený pro oddělení pavouků a mravenců od zbytku pozadí. Součástí výsledného postupu je také rozdělení objektu do menších částí. Z jednotlivých částí se potom získávají popisné charakteristiky, které byly navrženy ve spolupráci s pracovníky Přírodovědecké Fakulty MU. Kromě běžně používaných a v literatuře popsaných charakteristik (jako např. průměrná barva) byl v práci navržen postup pro popis celkového tvaru objektu využívající očekávanou symetrii pozorovaných objektů. Kromě textové části je výstupem práce aplikace, ve které jsou všechny navržené postupy implementovány. V aplikaci je možné upravit masky získané segmentací a na základě těchto úprav vypočítat údaje, které umožňují vyhodnotit kvalitu segmentačního algoritmu. Důležitou součástí aplikace je export naměřených popisných charakteristik. Tato aplikace je již v současné době využívána pracovnicí na Přírodovědecké fakultě MU.

Abstract:

This master thesis deals with image segmentation where spiders and ants are shown in a standardized position. The thesis also deals with obtaining image descriptors from these images that are designed for measurement of similarity between both species. The similarity measurement is intended for a research of ability how spiders can imitate ants. There are described general methods of segmentation in the theses which are suitable for this kind of problem. There is also described a particular method of segmentation which is designed to separate spiders and ants from the rest of a background. A part of the final approach is also object decomposition. The object is decomposed into smaller parts and there are obtained descriptive characteristics from each part. The characteristics were designed in cooperation with the Faculty of Science MU. Apart from common used and well described image descriptors (e.g. average color), there was designed a method to get a descriptor of whole body shape which uses expected symmetry of an object. The thesis also includes a software where all described approaches are implemented. It is also possible to edit masks gained from segmentation in the software. A quality of segmentation can be evaluated according to amount of editing. An important part of the software is also export of retrieved descriptive characteristics. The software is already being used by a worker at the Faculty of Science.
