Spatial analysis of an election support for presidential candidates in the USA: case of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá prostorovou analýzou proměnných faktorů v souvislosti s výsledky amerických prezidentských voleb v roce 2016, konkrétně pro státy Illinois, Indiana a Ohio, které jsou často označovány jako tzv. Swing states. Teoreticky se opírá o teorii konfliktních linií od norského politologa Rokkana a amerického sociologa a politologa Lipseta. V této teorii je kladen důraz na zkoumání konfliktních linií, které obvykle mají zásadní vliv na výsledek voleb. Práce se zaměřuje na proměnné faktory ekonomické, etnické, urbanizační a demografické. Na základě Pearsonovo korelačního koeficientu byl ověřen vzájemný vztah mezi proměnnými faktory a volební podporou prezidentských kandidátů. Hlavním výstupem práce je vyhodnocení zkoumaných faktorů a zjištění, že největší vliv na výsledky měly faktory etnické a demografické. Z hlediska teorie konfliktních linií se také potvrdila konfliktní linie město - venkov. V závěru práce je nastíněna možnost dalšího, důkladnějšího výzkumu, na základě kterého by se tato linie dala detailněji rozebrat.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the spatial analysis of variable factors in connection with the results of the 2016 US presidential election, specifically for the states of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, which are often called the Swing states. Theoretically, it relies on the theory of cleavages by a Norwegian political scientist Rokkan and the American sociologist and political scientist Lipset. This theory emphasizes the cleavages and their impact on the election results. The thesis focuses on economic, ethnic, urban and demographic variables. The examination is based on the use of Pearson correlation coefficient, which is important for proving and verifying the relationships between variable factors and electoral support for presidential candidates. The main output of the thesis is an evaluation of the examined factors and the finding that the ethnic and demographic factors had the greatest impact on the election results. From the point of view of the theory of cleavages, the effect of urban-rural cleavage was also confirmed. At the end of the thesis, there is outlined the possibility of subsequent, more thorough research on which basis this cleavage could be analyzed in more detail.
