Intergenerational solidarity and the influence of informal transfers on fertility behavior

Abstract:

Většina evropských zemí, Českou republiku nevyjímaje, se v současnosti vyznačuje mírou fertility pod hranicí prosté reprodukce. Předchozí výzkum identifikoval mnoho příčin tohoto stavu. Jedním z nich je individualizace a oslabující vazby a solidarita mezi členy rodiny. Finanční a časová náročnost narození dítěte obvykle vyžadují jistou míru podpory ať už ze strany formálních státních či soukromých institucí nebo prostřednictvím neformální pomoci poskytované členy širší rodiny nebo dalších blízkých osob. Disertační práce si klade za cíl prozkoumat efekt různých forem neformální podpory na narození dítěte nebo krátkodobé fertilitní plány. Dílčí analýzy jsou založeny na reprezentativních datech z několika mezinárodních výzkumů, které proběhly v evropských zemích v nedávných letech. Kromě obecného vztahu mezi neformální podporou a fertilitou jsou také zkoumány další faktory, které do tohoto vztahu vstupují, jako například pořadí dítěte nebo pohlaví. V závěru se pak disertace zabývá otázkou, zda se různé formy rodinné solidarity vzájemně podporují či spíše vylučují.

Abstract:

Fertility rate of most of the European countries, including the Czech Republic, is now under the replacement fertility rate. One of the possible causes of the low fertility is the individualization and weak family bonds and solidarity. Financial and time costs of the children usually require a support provided either by the formal state or private institutions or by members of the family or other close people. The thesis explores the effect of various forms of informal support on the childbirth or the short-term fertility plans. The analyzes are based on representative data from several recent international surveys. Beside a general relationship between informal support and fertility, other factors are analyzed such as the effect of the child´s order or the effect of gender on the fertility planning. The final chapter deals with a possible conflict between various forms of family solidarity.
