The history of American penitentiary

Abstract:

Ve své bakalářské práci se zabývám vývojem amerických nápravných zařízení ve třech časových obdobích na pozadí sociokulturních faktorů, které tento vývoj ovlivňovaly. První část popisující období americké kolonizace představuje především vývoj trestání a prvotní snahy o reformu soudobých věznic, které dosud postrádaly nápravný charakter (Howard, Bentham, Fryová). Druhá část je věnována vzniku dvou nových penitenciárních systémů (pensylvánský a auburnský), jejich vzájemnému srovnání a pokusům o jejich reformu v druhé polovině 19. století (elmirský systém). Třetí část práce se zabývá vývojem americké penitenciaristiky, jejími charakteristickými rysy a problémy, kterým čelí, od přelomu 20. století až po současnost.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis deals with the historical development of American penitentiaries in three historical periods in the background of social and cultural factors shaping this development. The first part focused on the period of American colonization examines especially the development of punishment and initial efforts to reform contemporary prisons that did not have a reformatory character at that time (Howard, Bentham, Fry). The second part is dedicated to the formation of two new penitentiary systems, (Pennsylvanian and Auburn models), their mutual comparison and attempts at their reform in the second half of the 19th century (Elmira model). The third part of the thesis presents further development of American penitentiary and its characteristic features as well as problems from the turn of the 20th century to the present.
