Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá hudebním vývojem americké nahrávací společnosti Motown v období 1967‒1969 se zaměřením na skupiny The Marvelettes, The Supremes a The Temptations. Práce má za cíl nastínit s pomocí analýzy primárních a sekundárních hudebních složek vybraných nahrávek charakteristické znaky repertoáru a jeho proměny. Metodologicky vychází z britské muzikologické literatury věnované analýze populární hudby a v přístupu k tématu navazuje na americké studie mapující soulovou hudbu 60. let. Výsledky ukazují, že proměny Motown soundu se v daném období projevily s různou intenzitou ve většině hudebních aspektů, zvláště v metricko-rytmické organizaci, instrumentaci, textuře a zvuku. Radikální modifikaci zavedeného stylu pak představoval nástup psychedelického soulu a funku v hudbě Temptations. Z analýz rovněž vyplývá, že i na sklonku 60. let zůstávaly v tvorbě Motownu stále přítomny výrazné elementy soulu.

Abstract:

This master’s thesis examines the musical development of the American recording company Motown between the years 1967 and 1969, focusing on The Marvelettes, The Supremes and The Temptations. The work aims to outline the characteristics of the repertoire and its changes, based on the analysis of primary and secondary musical domains of selected recordings. The methodology of the paper is based on the British musicological literature devoted to the analysis of popular music and its approach towards the topic draws inspiration from the American studies on soul music of the 1960s. The results demonstrate that the changes of Motown Sound manifested themselves in the given period with varying intensity in most musical aspects, especially in metric-rhythmic organization, instrumentation, texture and sound. The advent of psychedelic soul and funk in the music of the Temptations represented a radical modification of the established style. Also, the analysis indicates that strong elements of soul remained still present in Motown’s music in the late 1960s.
