Horticulture therapy in social work with people with mental illness

Abstract:

Absolventská práce si klade za cíl konceptualizaci tématu zahradní terapie v sociální práci s lidmi s duševním onemocněním s důrazem na onemocnění z diagnostického okruhu F2, schizofrenie. Dalším cílem je vypracovat analýzu potřebnosti zahradně-terapeutického projektu pro poskytovatele sociálních služeb lidem se schizofrenií. V první kapitole je popsán současný stav poznání v této oblasti, jsou představeny vybrané zahraniční výzkumy. Následuje popis aktuální situace v České republice s důrazem na reformu psychiatrické péče. V dalších částech je představena zahradní terapie, příklady jejího využití v sociálních službách v Česku, a duševní onemocnění. Část je také věnována přímo schizofrenii, příznakům, léčbě a potřebám osob s tímto onemocněním. Teoretické ukotvení těchto pojmů je pak propojeno se sociální prací skrze přístupy sociální práce, vhodné pro tuto cílovou skupinu, zejména přístup recovery. Následuje sociální politika, dostupná pomoc a aktuálně řešené výzvy jako příspěvek na péči, invalidní důchody a stigmatizace. Dále je zohledněna platná legislativa. Analýza potřebnosti zahradně terapeutického projektu blíže popisuje specifika a potřeby cílové skupiny spolu s příčinami a dopady absence tohoto projektu.

Abstract:

The aim of this graduate thesis is to conceptualize the topic of horticultural therapy in social work with people with mental illness, with an emphasis on the disorder in F2 diagnostical category named in the MKN-10 (the czech version of International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems), schizophrenia. Another aim of the thesis is to develop an analysis of the need for a horticultural therapy project for social service providers, whose target group is people with schizophrenia. In the first chapter the current state of knowledge in this area is described and selected international research are presented. This is followed by a description of the current situation in the Czech Republic with an emphasis on the reform of psychiatric care. In the next sections, horticultural therapy, examples of its use in social services in the Czech Republic, and mental illness in general are presented. A part of this chapter is also devoted to schizophrenia, its symptoms, treatment and needs of people with this disorder. The theoretical anchoring of these concepts is then linked to social work through social work approaches suitable for this target group, especially the recovery approach. This is followed by social policy, available aid, and current challenges, such as care allowance, disability pensions and stigma. Current Czech legislation is also considered. The analysis of the need for the horticultural therapy project details the specificities and needs of the target group, along with the causes and impacts of the absence of this project.
