Vztah mezi ESG skóre a finanční výkonností podniků v ČR se zvláštním důrazem na environmentální složku a uhlíkovou stopu

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je identifikovat vztah mezi environmentální dimenzí ESG, uhlíkovou stopou a finanční výkonností podniků v České republice a současně vliv velikostní kategorie a odvětví ekonomiké činnosti podniku podle CZ-NACE na tento vztah. Empirická část vychází z rozsáhlého datového souboru a kombinuje deskriptivní a strukturální analýzu s korelační a vícerozměrnou lineární regresní analýzou. Analyzovány jsou emise skleníkových plynů (Scope 1 a Scope 2), environmentální skóre, emisní intenzita a finanční ukazatele ROA, ROE a EBITDA. Výsledky naznačují, že environmentální profil podniků je významně determinován odvětvovou příslušností a technologickou náročností. Více než 50 % analyzovaných podniků spadá do skupiny s nejhorším emisním profilem, přičemž MSP jsou v této kategorii zastoupeny častěji. Nejvyšší emisní intenzita je identifikována v sektoru H – doprava a skladování, u MSP také v sektoru A – zemědělství, lesnictví a rybářství. S rostoucí velikostí podniků roste význam sektoru G – velkoobchod a maloobchod v důsledku logistických řetězců. Regresní analýza indikuje, že vztah mezi environmentální dimenzí ESG a finanční výkonností není jednoznačný a pouze částečně statisticky významný. Ukazatel EBITDA se jeví jako nejvhodnější měřítko finanční výkonnosti ve vztahu k environmentálním faktorům, zatímco emisní intenzita se jako statisticky významný determinant neprokazuje. Po zohlednění velikosti podniku a odvětví význam environmentálních proměnných oslabuje. Finanční výkonnost je tak primárně determinována strukturálními charakteristikami podniků, zejména velikostí a odvětvovou příslušností. Přínos práce spočívá v empirickém potvrzení významu strukturálních faktorů při hodnocení vztahu mezi ESG a finanční výkonností v podmínkách české ekonomiky. Omezením práce je nízká vysvětlující schopnost modelů, heterogenita ESG dat a absence časové dimenze. Další výzkum by se měl zaměřit na kauzalitu, zahrnutí emisí Scope 3 a detailnější sektorovou analýzu.

Abstract:

The aim of the master’s thesis is to identify the relationship between the environmental dimension of ESG, carbon footprint, and the financial performance of firms in the Czech Republic, while also examining the influence of firm size and industry classification according to CZ-NACE on this relationship. The empirical part is based on an extensive dataset and combines descriptive and structural analysis with correlation and multiple linear regression analysis. The analysis includes greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2), environmental scores, emission intensity, and financial indicators such as ROA, ROE, and EBITDA. The results suggest that the environmental profile of firms is significantly determined by industry affiliation and technological intensity. More than 50% of the analyzed firms fall into the category with the worst emission profile, with SMEs being more frequently represented in this group. The highest emission intensity is identified in sector H – transportation and storage, and among SMEs also in sector A – agriculture, forestry, and fishing. As firm size increases, the importance of sector G – wholesale and retail trade becomes more pronounced due to logistics and distribution chains. The regression analysis indicates that the relationship between the environmental dimension of ESG and financial performance is not unambiguous and is only partially statistically significant. EBITDA appears to be the most appropriate measure of financial performance in relation to environmental factors, whereas emission intensity does not prove to be a statistically significant determinant. After controlling for firm size and industry, the significance of environmental variables weakens. Financial performance is therefore primarily determined by structural characteristics of firms, particularly firm size and industry affiliation. The contribution of this thesis lies in the empirical confirmation of the importance of structural factors in assessing the relationship between ESG and financial performance in the context of the Czech economy. The main limitations include the low explanatory power of the models, heterogeneity of ESG data, and the absence of a time dimension. Future research should focus on causality, the inclusion of Scope 3 emissions, and more detailed sectoral analysis.
