The Relationship Between Internet Addiction, Use of New Media and Personality Characteristics of University Students

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá závislostí na Internetu a jejími souvislostmi, tj. osobnostními charakteristikami jedince a používáním nových médií a zařízení. Teoretická část čerpá zejména z aktuálních zahraničních zdrojů. Jsou zde prezentovány teoretické poznatky o závislosti na Internetu v kontextu nelátkových závislostí. Dále je rozvedeno její zařazení do diagnostických manuálů psychických poruch, teoretické modely, které se jí týkají, její diagnostika a dostupné diagnostické metody. Rozebrány jsou také rizikové faktory závislosti na Internetu, komorbidita s jinými poruchami a možnosti prevence a terapie. Zbylé kapitoly shrnují teoretické poznatky o zkoumaných souvislostech. Empirická část je koncipována jako korelační studie. Zkoumá závislost na Internetu ve vzorku vysokoškolských studentů a mladých absolventů čítajícím 305 osob (141 mužů a 164 žen). V dotazníkovém šetření jsou použity škály Excessive Internet Use k určení míry závislosti na Internetu, Excessive Smartphone Use k určení míry nadměrného používání chytrých zařízení, NEO pětifaktorový osobnostní inventář (60 pol.) a dotazník vlastní konstrukce týkající se internetových aktivit a nových médií. Výzkum u vzorku potvrdil souvislost závislosti na Internetu s chytrými mobilními zařízeními, s používáním sociálních sítí a s rychlým zasíláním zpráv. Dále byly potvrzeny očekávané souvislosti se čtyřmi z pěti osobnostních charakteristik podle pětifaktorového modelu. Konkrétně se potvrdila pozitivní korelace závislosti na Internetu s neuroticismem a dále negativní korelace s extraverzí, svědomitostí a přívětivostí. Zjištěna byla také negativní korelace závislosti s věkem. Nepodařilo se ověřit očekávané souvislosti s počítačovými hrami, s pohlavím a s některými novými médii a zařízeními.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with Internet addiction and its relation to personality characteristics of an individual and use of new media and devices. The theoretical part is based mainly on up-to-date foreign sources. It presents theoretical knowledge about Internet addiction in the context of non-substance addictions. The text further elaborates on its inclusion in diagnostic manuals of mental disorders, related theoretical models, its diagnosis and available diagnostic tools. Risk factors of the Internet addiction, co-morbidity with other disorders and possibilities of prevention and therapy are also discussed. The remaining chapters summarise theoretical knowledge about the examined contexts. The empirical part is designed as a correlation study. It examines Internet addiction in a sample of 305 university students and young graduates (141 men and 164 women). The questionnaire survey makes use of the Excessive Internet Use scale to measure Internet addiction, the Excessive Smartphone Use scale to measure excessive use of smart devices, the NEO five-factor personality inventory (60 items) and a questionnaire of own design concerning Internet activities and new media. The present study confirmed a connection of the Internet addiction with smart mobile devices, with the use of social networking and with Instant Messaging in the sample. The expected associations were also confirmed with four of the five personality characteristics according to the five-factor model. Specifically, a positive correlation between Internet addiction and neuroticism and a negative correlation with extraversion, conscientiousness and agreeableness were confirmed. A negative correlation was also found with age. It was not possible to confirm the expected connection with computer games, with gender and with some new media and devices.
