The process of formation of maternal role in Czech mothers

Abstract:

Předkládaná kvalitativní diplomová práce si kladla za cíl prozkoumat proces formování mateřské role u současných českých matek. Zahraniční studie poskytují poznatky o tomto procesu a o vlivech, které v něm intervenují, v českém prostředí však relevantní výzkum stále chybí. Cílem práce je tedy také povzbudit výzkumný zájem o tuto oblast. Práce je opřena o teorii sociálního srovnávání a koncept intenzivního mateřství. Data, která tato práce využívá, byla získána v rámci projektu DOMOV (Děti, otcové a matky o vývoji) prostřednictvím 10 polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s matkami přímo v jejich domácnostech. Rozhovory byly analyzovány pomocí principů zakotvené teorie. Byly identifikovány čtyři centrální kategorie: Aktivní mateřství, Prostor pro samostatný rozvoj dítěte, Nebýt „pouze“ matkou a Důležitost emocí v rodičovství; dále celkem 17 vedlejších kategorií, které centrální kategorie ovlivňují a formují. Matky kladou důraz na aktivitu v mateřské roli, která spočívá ve snaze získávat kvalitní informace o mateřství, prosazovat vlastní výchovné přístupy a zajímat se o aktuální trendy v mateřství. Vnímají také význam samostatnosti dítěte, když se jej snaží nepřipoutávat výhradně k sobě a jednají s ním jako s partnerem; zároveň akcentují důležitost nastavení hranic. Ženy se svou identitu snaží chápat šíře, než jen skrze mateřství. Nechtějí se pro mateřství obětovat, navracejí se do zaměstnání, nebo si touží od mateřské role občas odpočinout. Matky přikládají význam emocím, nejen svým, ale i dítěte, a využívají je pro formulaci vlastního výchovného přístupu. Výstupem práce je teoretický model popisující utváření mateřské role u českých matek. Výsledky analýzy jsou dále diskutovány vůči dosavadním poznatkům a jsou navrženy možné linie dalšího výzkumu.

Abstract:

The aim of this qualitative thesis is to explore process of mother role formation in Czech mothers. Foreign studies provide knowledge about this process and about influences that intervene within but relevant research in Czech background is still lacking. Partial aim of this thesis is also to encourage research interest in this field. The thesis uses social comparison theory and intensive mothering concept. Data used in this thesis were collected through DOMOV research project via 10 semi-structured interviews with mothers in their homes. The interviews were analyzed with use of grounded theory method. Four central categories were identified: Active motherhood, Opportunities for independent child development, Not to be “only” mother and Importance of emotions in parenthood; and 17 subsidiary categories that influence and shape central categories. Mothers emphasis activity in role of mother that lies in effort to gain quality information about motherhood, to enforce their own nurturing approach and to be interested in contemporary trends in motherhood. They also perceive the importance of child autonomy when they try not to bond their child exclusively to them and they treat their child as a partner; at the same time they accentuate the importance of limits in parenting. Women also try to extend their identity: they do not want to sacrifice themselves for motherhood, they return to work or they simply need to get some rest from their maternal duties. Emotions, mother´s own and child´s, are of great significance for mothers and they use emotions in forming their own parenting style. Theoretical model describing the shaping of the mother role in Czech mothers is the outcome of this thesis. The results of analysis are further discussed in the context of previous findings and future research directions are suggested.
