Arab Spring and the role of Turkey

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této diplomové práce je analýza dopadů tzv. arabského jara na Turecko. Práce zkoumá důsledky vlny nepokojů a následných událostí, které se v arabských zemích odehrály od začátku roku 2011. Analyzován je zejména vliv těchto událostí na tureckou domácí a zahraniční politiku a pozici Turecka v rámci regionu Blízkého východu. V práci jsou nejprve vysvětleny základní pojmy, které jsou dále podrobeny analýze. Stručně je zde popsán historický vývoj turecké domácí a zahraniční politiky s důrazem na politiku současné vládní Strany spravedlnosti a pokroku. Dále jsou v této části uvedena základní fakta o událostech ve vybraných revolučních arabských zemích v roce 2011. Pozornost je věnována především politickým změnám, k nimž v daných zemích došlo a následnému vývoji, jenž je relevantní pro tuto práci. V následujících kapitolách jsou analyzovány zásadní dopady arabských nepokojů. Nejdříve práce předkládá výčet geopolitických důsledků arabského jara na celý region Blízkého východu s důrazem na hlavní regionální aktéry. Dále se blíže zaměřuje na pozici Turecka. Analyzuje a vysvětluje reakci tureckých představitelů na události v jednotlivých arabských zemích. Rozebírá důsledky arabského jara na turecké domácí politické scéně. Snaží se vyjasnit veškeré pozitivní i negativní dopady, které ovlivnily tureckou zahraniční politiku v regionu a vztahy s důležitými blízkovýchodními zeměmi. Na závěr práce zkoumá vliv Turecka na události a následný vývoj v revolučních arabských zemích a rozebírá hypotézu Turecka jako ideálního politického a ekonomického modelu pro tyto země.

Abstract:

The main aim of this diploma thesis is an analysis of the impacts of the Arab spring on Turkey. The thesis deals with the effects of the unrest wave and subsequent events that have taken place in Arab countries since the beginning of 2011. The analysis is particularly focused on the impact of these events on the Turkish domestic and foreign policy and the position of Turkey in the Middle East. In the first part the author explains the key terms which are analyzed further. It briefly describes the historical development of Turkish domestic and foreign policy with emphasis on the policy of the present government led by the Justice and Development Party. Then, it outlines the basic facts about the revolutionary events in selected Arab countries in 2011. The main attention is devoted to the political changes that have occurred in these countries as well as to the subsequent developments relevant for the thesis. The following chapters analyze the essential impacts of the Arab uprising. First, there are presented the main geopolitical consequences of the Arab spring in the entire region of the Middle East with emphasis on the most important regional actors. Then, the thesis deals in detail with the position of Turkey. It analyzes and explains the reaction of Turkish officials to events in individual countries. The author examines the consequences on Turkey's domestic political scene. Further, the entire positive and negative impacts are analyzed that have influenced Turkish foreign policy in the region as well as the Turkish relations with the key Middle Eastern countries. Finally, the thesis elaborates on the influence of Turkey on the events and the subsequent developments of the revolutionary Arab countries and discusses the hypothesis of Turkey as an ideal political and economic model for these countries.
