Ekosystémy, v nichž teplota nestoupá nad 5 °C, patří mezi nejběžnější ekosystémy na Zemi. Žije zde mnoho doposud nepoznaných mikrobiálních společenstev s potenciálním využitím v biotechnologiích, jakož i při chápání vzniku a přežívání života v extrémním prostředí. Ecosystems in which the temperature does not rise above 5 ° C are among the most common ecosystems on Earth. There are many still unknown microbial communities with potential use in biotechnology, as well as in understanding the origin and survival of life in extreme environments.
