Theoretical and Technical Aspects of Documentary Photography by Selected Czech Authors from the Mid-1960s to the Present

Abstract:

Disertační práce Teoretické a technické aspekty dokumentární tvorby vybraných českých autorů od poloviny 60. let 20. století do současnosti se zabývá analýzou fotografického díla deseti českých fotografů a fotografek, a to Viktora Koláře, Jindřicha Štreita, Miroslava Myšky, Libuše Jarcovjákové, Dany Kyndrové, Michala Bartoše, Karla Cudlína, Evžena Sobka, Tomáše Pospěcha a Veroniky Lukášové. První část práce představuje chronologické zpracování dokumentárního díla uvedených autorů. Další část práce je analýzou dokumentární tvorby uvedených autorů z pohledu několika technických a teoretických okruhů: vztahu dokumentární a reportážní fotografie, aspektem času, dále konstruktem objektivní versus subjektivní přístup v živé fotografii. Dále rozebírám způsob volby tématu, rozdíl v pojetí dokumentu při realizaci volné tvorby a zakázky, přístup k autentičnosti zobrazených situací v době tvorby a také případnou dodatečnou manipulaci se snímky. Neopomíjím také vliv technologického vývoje po rozšíření digitálních aparátů. Velmi zásadním tématem analýzy díla jednotlivých fotografů je dále obrazová skladba snímků, a to s podtématy kompozice, využití černobílé fotografie a barvy, využití obrazové degradace v případě šumu, neostrosti či tonálních posunů. Posledním okruhem zájmu je pak problematika obsahu a popisnosti fotografie.

Abstract:

Dissertation thesis deals with the analysis of the photographic work of ten Czech photographers: namely Viktor Kolář, Jindřich Štreit, Miroslav Myška, Libuše Jarcovjáková, Dana Kyndrová, Michal Bartoš, Karel Cudlín, Evžen Sobek, Tomáš Pospěch and Veronika Lukášová. The first part of the thesis introduces the documentary work of the all the artists in question in chronological order. The work of half of the authors have never been properly researched and published. Next part of the thesis involves an analysis of the documentary work of the photographers in question. I am trying to distinguish the fine line between the terms documentary and journalist photography, the aspect of time and the concept of objective versus subjective approach. Further I describe the way of finding the point of interest, the difference between free creation and assigned job, attitude to the authenticity of the captured scenes at the moment of creation and manipulation of the images in post processing. I also involve impact of technological development after the rise of digital technologies. I do not leave out the topic of the image composition, the use of black and white or full color photography and also the application of image degradation. The last point of interest is the issue of photographical content.
