Need for cognitive closure in context of impulsivity and task interruption effect

Abstract:

Potřeba kognitivního uzavření je osobnostní konstrukt, který podle dosavadních výzkumů ovlivňuje emoční reakce člověka a jeho chováním během poznávání svého okolí sám i ve skupině, a též je spojován s politickými preferencemi autoritářství. Cílem této práce je blíže prozkoumat potřebu kognitivního uzavření a principy jejího fungování. Celkový výzkumný vzorek čítal 819 lidí, především vysokoškolských studentů. Výzkum byl prováděn dotazníkovou formou administrovanou online. Byly testovány hypotézy o pozitivním vztahu s výkonově měřenou impulzivitou a s emoční reaktivitou. Vztah s impulzivitou nebyl výzkumně podpořen (p = 0,14), stejně tak ani vztah s emoční reaktivitou (p = 0,95). Nicméně byla nalezena negativní korelace vztahu potřeby uzavření a nedostatku promyšlenosti jednání (r = -0,49; p < 0,001). Na základě podobných znaků fungování byla dále zkoumána interakce efektu přerušení úkolu a míry potřeby uzavření na výkon v paměťovém úkolu a během formování dojmu. Byl předpokládaný její pozitivní vliv na paměť a zvýšení účinku primingu při formování dojmu. V paměťovém úkolu se ukázal být spojený efekt přerušení a potřeby uzavření na výkon negativní (r = -0,24; p < 0,001). Během formování dojmu se neprojevil vliv potřeby uzavření, přerušení úkolu ani jejich interakce (p = 0,07). Z výsledků vyplývá, že přerušení úkolu má ve spojení s vyšší mírou potřeby uzavření negativní efekt na paměťové schopnosti.

Abstract:

The need for cognitive closure is a personal construct which, according to recent research, affects emotional reactions, individual’s behaviour when exploring his surroundings alone or in group, and is connected to political preferences towards authoritarianism. The aim of this thesis is to closely examine the need for cognitive closure and the principles of its functioning. The research sample consisted of 819 people, mostly undergraduate students. The data were gathered through online questionnaires. Hypotheses about a positive connection with impulsivity in performance, and emotional reactivity were tested. The relationship with impulsivity was not empirically supported (p = 0,14), neither was the relationship with emotional reactivity (p = 0,95), but a significant negative correlation between the need for cognitive closure and the lack of premeditation was found (r = -0,49; p < 0,001). Due to its similar functioning, the task interruption effect on memory task and impression formation was examined. Possible interaction effect with the need for cognitive closure was presumed. This interaction was supposed to enhance memory performance as well as to enhance the effect of priming on impression formation. In memory task, this interaction was shown to be negative (r = -0,24; p < 0,001). Impression formation was not affected by need for cognitive closure, task interruption, or their interaction (p = 0,07). The results imply that the task interruption and its interaction with the need for cognitive closure have negative effect on memory performance.
