Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je prozkoumat hlavní výzvy ve výuce anglického jazyka v afrických zemích Třetího světa. Výuka angličtiny na tomto kontinentu je velmi specifická především kvůli svému ambivalentnímu spojení s koloniální minulostí, kdy si Evropané podmanili africkou půdu i obyvatelstvo, a také pro závislost Afriky na anglofonních zemích z hlediska ekonomiky, kultury a dalších oblastí. K lepšímu pochopení současné komplexní situace je v první kapitole analyzována historie interakcí Afričanů s výukou angličtiny. Dále propojuje historický vývoj se současností zkoumáním významných důsledků africké výuky angličtiny v různých oblastech, konkrétně v kultuře, politice, ekonomii, společnosti, lingvistice a psychologii. V druhé části se práce soustředí na praktické využití těchto poznatků vyvozením závěrů a doporučení pro výuku angličtiny v Africe. Prameny jsou zde jak fakta z prvních dvou kapitol, tak výsledky výzkumu, který byl navržen pro potřeby práce. Tento kvalitativní výzkum měl podobu semistrukturovaného dotazníku a byl vyplněn zčásti americkými a zčásti africkými učiteli. Mezi zaznamenanými rozdíly byla jak odlišná kultura, náboženství a mentalita, tak například postoj místních učitelů i žáků k výuce. Respondenti dotazníků rovněž zhodnotili své metody a přípravu. Doporučení pro zkvalitnění výuky anglického jazyka v Africa se týkala investice do vztahu se žáky, uznání a využití rozdílů mezi západní a africkou kulturou, přijetí místní normy angličtiny a rozhodnutí se skutečně hluboce zapojit. Pokud se výuka anglického jazyka nebude schopná odtrhnout od anglo-amerických modelů a přizpůsobit se africkým studentům, bude docházet k prohlubování ambivalence postojů Afričanů k angličtině a zhoršování dopadů její výuky na celou africkou společnost.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to examine major challenges in ELT in the Third World countries of Africa. Teaching English in this continent is specific mainly due to its ambiguous connection with the colonial past when Europeans seized the land and people of Africa and also because of the African dependence on English-speaking countries in terms of economy, culture and other diverse areas. The first chapter analyses the history of ELT in Africa to help comprehend the current complex situation. To link the historical development to the present, it further investigates the important consequences of the English education in Africa from various areas, specifically culture, politics, economy, society, linguistics, and psychology. In its second half, the thesis is focused on the practical use of those facts by drawing the conclusions and recommendations for teaching English in Africa. The main resources are the findings of the two previous chapters as well as research conducted for the needs of the thesis. The qualitative study is in the form of a semi-structured questionnaire, filled in partly by the American and partly by the African teachers. The main differences described are diverse culture, religion and mentality as well as, for instance, attitudes of students and local teachers to the education. The questionnaire respondents also assess their methods and preparations. The recommendations for the quality improvement of the ELT in Africa concerned investing in relationships with students, acknowledging and employment of culture differences between Africa and the West, acceptance of local norm of English and decision to get deeply involved in all the process. Unless the African ELT is separated from the anglo-american model and a significantly adapted to the African students, the ambivalence of attitudes of the Africans to English is bound to deepen and the negative impacts of ELT on the all African society are likely to get worse.
