Competitions for artworks in public space in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Teoretická část práce definuje městský veřejný prostor a popisuje význam umění v něm. Zkoumá historií i současnou situací umění ve veřejném prostoru v České republice a nástroj výtvarných soutěží. Představuje i aktéry soutěžního procesu, se kterými byl pro potřeby práce proveden rozhovor. Provedené rozhovory s devíti konkrétními odborníky představují hlavní pramen pro tuto práci. Všechny byly analyzovány s cílem formulace doporučení, která jsou odpovědí na výzkumnou otázku, která se ptá jak proces a kulturu soutěžení v České republice zlepšit, zefektivnit a učinit transparentnější a vstřícnější pro všechny aktéry, především soutěžící. Rozhovory, jejich analýza a doporučení přináší aktuální a věcný příspěvek do debaty o soutěžení a současném umění ve veřejném prostoru. Čtenáři nastíní tuto problematiku z více úhlů pohledu a umožní mu náhled do soutěžního procesu včetně všech případných komplikací.

Abstract:

The theoretical part of the thesis defines the urban public space and describes the importance of art in it. It examines the history and current situation of art in public space in the Czech Republic and the tool of art competition. It also presents the actors in the competition process, with whom interviews were conducted for the need of this thesis. Interviews with nine experts are the main source for this thesis. All were analyzed with the purpose of formulating recommendations that are the answer to a research question that asks how to improve, streamline and make the process and culture of competition in the Czech Republic more transparent and responsive for all actors, especially for the competitors. The interviews, their analysis and recommendations make a current and factual contribution to the debate on competition and contemporary art in public space. Readers will be able to view this issue from several angles. The thesis want to give them an insight into the competition process, including all possible complications.
