Caucasus Separatism – South Ossetia and Abkhazia Case

Abstract:

Území Kavkazu je z geopolitického hlediska hraničním a do značné míry nárazníkovým prostorem mezi Evropou a Asií. Jeho poloha a vysoká etnická a kulturní heterogenita tradičně přispívá ke vzniku třecích ploch a konfliktů. V současné době existuje v oblasti Kavkazu několik de facto nezávislých států, které však nedosáhly mezinárodního uznání své suverenity. Tato bakalářská práce se zaměří na případ Jižní Osetie a Abcházie, jež oficiálně stále zůstávají součástí Gruzie.Cílem práce bude komparace osetínských a abcházských separatistických snah, jejich postavení v rámci Gruzie a důsledků vyhlášení nezávislosti. Úvodní kapitola této práce definuje separatismus z obecného hlediska. V rámci teoretických východisek bude rovněž analyzován charakter separatistických a etnických konfliktů, jejichž znaky budou následně zkoumány na případu Jižní Osetie a Abcházie. Hlavní metodou práce bude případová studie a komparace.

Abstract:

Territory of the Caucasus is from geopolitical point of view a border and largely a buffer area between Europe and Asia. Its location and high ethnic and cultural heterogeneity has traditionally contributed to the emergence of friction area and conflict. Currently, there is several de facto independent states in the Caucasus region which didn´t reach the international recognition of its sovereignty. This bachelor degrese thesis will focus on the case of South Ossetia and Abkhazia which officialy still remain a part of Georgia.Aim of this work is a comparison of ossetiens and abkhazians separatist endeavour, their status within Georgia and the consequences of declaring independence. Introductory chapter of this work defines separatism in general aspect. In terms of theoretical resources will also be analyzed the nature of separatist and ethnic conflict which characters will be investigated in the case of South Ossetia an Abkhazia. The main method of this bachelor degrese thesis will be a case study and comparison.
