Peeling the Orange: Analysis of Jeanette Winterson´s Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit

Abstract:

This thesis examines the semi-autobiographical novel Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson, which illustrates a suffocating upbringing of Jeanette's alter ego of the same name by her emotionally-cold adoptive mother, who is - besides all - also utterly devoted to the evangelic Christian church. During Jeanette's transition to the adulthood, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit touches on various challenging topics and symbols. Through a close reading, this thesis aims to explore the themes that are depicted in the novel, including but not limited to the binary system imposed on sexuality in a highly conservative society that is generally in favour of heterosexuality, but also sexual desire, the search of one's own identity or the conflict between an individual and the community. As Winterson suggests throughout the novel, sexuality is thrust upon the queer minority by the dominant discourse and the religious doctrine, and any deviation from the norm established by the wide public is heavily disfavoured. With the primary source as well as relevant secondary sources, this thesis attempts to reflect on the issues connected with queer identity in the 20th century's conservative society and, in the process, also stresses the importance of the construction of the authentic, true self - specifically in the case of Jeanette Winterson.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá semiautobiografickým románem Na světě nejsou jen pomeranče od Jeanette Wintersonové. Skrz pohled svého stejnojmenného alter ega, Jeannete Winterson ilustruje dusivé prostředí ve kterém byla vychovávana svou chladnou a velice silně nábožensky založenou adoptivní matkou. Hlavní částí této práce se pak stává následná analýza motivů a symbolik, které zrománu vyvstávají, jako je například sexualita, invence vlastního já, binární systém ve spojistosti se sexualitou, a nebo konflikt mezi jednotlivcem a společností. Winterson také nadnáší, že sexualita je koncept, jenž je queer menšinám vnucen, ať už společností či náboženskou institucí, a jakákoliv deviace od této normy je tvrdě odsuzována. Na základě hlubšího studia primárního zdroje a dalších relevantních zdrojů sekundárních tato bakalářská práce zrcadlí problematiku queer identity v konzervativní společnosti 20. století a klade důraz na invenci sebe samého - převážně ve vztahu k Jeanette Winterson.
