Philosophical and mathematical aspects of Zeno´s paradoxes of motion

Abstract:

V této práci jsou fragmenty Zénónových paradoxů pohybu, jmenovitě Dichotomie, Achilles a želva, Šíp a Stadion uvedeny v kontextu jeho dalších pěti paradoxů. První kapitola ukazuje, že Zénón byl při formulování svých paradoxů nejvíce ovlivněn Parmenidovou filosofií (deduktivní úvahy o jsoucím, souvislost jsoucího) a pythagorejstvím (interpretace světa na základě diskrétní matematiky, neomezenost sudých čísel, nemožnost vysvětlit iracionální čísla, nepřímý důkaz) prostřednictvím samotného Parmenida nebo některých Pythagorejců. Druhá kapitola se zabývá Standardním řešením čtyř paradoxů pohybu, které je založeno na standardní ?-? matematické analýze. Třetí kapitola představuje Dichotomii a její inverzní verzi jako supertask. Čtvrtá kapitola se nejen více soustřeďuje na matematický základ standardního řešení, ale také se zabývá řešením založeným na nestandardní matematické analýze, přičemž však odmítá některá tvrzení W. I. McLaughlina. Autor považuje Standardní řešení paradoxů pohybu za nyní nejpřijatelnější a Zénóna z Eleje za jednoho z inspirátorů oboru matematické fyziky v Evropě.

Abstract:

In this work, the fragments of Zeno's paradoxes of motion, namely of the Dichotomy, Achilles and the turtle, the Arrow, and the Stadium are presented in the context of his other five paradoxes. The first chapter shows that Zeno was most influenced in the formulation of his paradoxes by Parmenid's philosophy (deductive reflections on being, continuity of being) and by Pythagoreanism (interpretation of the world based on discrete mathematics, the limitlessness of even numbers, the impossibility of explaining irrational numbers, indirect proof) through Parmenid himself or some Pythagoreans. The second chapter deals with the Standard solution of the four paradoxes of motion which is based on standard ?-? mathematical analysis. The third chapter demonstrates the Dichotomy and its inverse version as a supertask. The fourth chapter not only focuses more on the mathematical basis of Standard solution but also deals with the solution based on non-standard mathematical analysis rejecting, however, some of W. I. McLaughlin's assertions. The author considers the Standard solution to the paradoxes of motion to be the most acceptable at present and Zeno of Elea to be one of the inspirers of the field of mathematical physics in Europe, although his aims were probably different.
