Analysis of the translation of proper names and toponyms from English to Spanish, Czech and Slovak from the trilogy The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien

Abstract:

This master's thesis explores the issue of translating proper names in literature. The aim of the thesis is to demonstrate what translation procedures are used in translating a specific work into different languages. In our case, we are going to deal with the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkien and the respective translations of proper names into Czech, Slovak and Spanish. In the theoretical part we will point out how different experts approach the issue, what translation procedures are applied, how the translator should approach his role in order to do the best possible work, what obstacles in translation exist and we will also deal with the classification of proper names. The practical part consists of two analyses. In the first one, we will compare the individual translation procedures used in translating proper names from the English original into Czech, Slovak and Spanish. In the second analysis, we will focus our attention on some concrete proper names, the translations of which we will focus on in more depth.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá problematiku překladu vlastních jmen v literatuře. Cílem práce je demonstrovat, jaké překladatelské postupy se uplatňují při překladu konkrétního díla do různých jazyků. V našem případě se budeme zabývat trilogií Pána prstenů od J. R. R. Tolkiena a příslušnými překlady vlastních jmen do češtiny, slovenštiny a španělštiny. V teoretické části poukážeme na to, jak k dané problematice přistupují různí odborníci, jaké překladatelské postupy se uplatňují, jak by měl překladatel přistupovat ke své úloze, aby odvedl co nejkvalitnější práci, jaké překážky v překladu se vyskytují a rovněž se budeme zabývat klasifikací vlastních jmen. Praktická část se skládá ze dvou analýz. V té první budeme porovnávat jednotlivé překladatelské postupy použité při překladu vlastních jmen z anglického originálu do češtiny, slovenštiny a španělštiny. Ve druhé analýze zaměříme naši pozornost na námi vybraná vlastní jména, jejichž překladům se budeme věnovat hlouběji.
