The interpretative aspects of female characters in the operatic work of The Rape of Lucretia by Benjamin Britten

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zaměřuje na ženské operní postavy v opeře Benjamina Brittena Zneuctění Lukrécie. Cílem práce je vytvoření souhrnu interpretačních aspektů vokálně dramatického vyjádření, které by bylo možno využít při studiu a jevištním ztvárnění jednotlivých postav. První oddíl mapuje skladatelovy životní i kompoziční mezníky, věnuje se jeho tvorbě s ohledem na jeho vokální dílo. Druhý oddíl je již zaměřen na samotnou operu Zneuctění Lukrécie, zabývá se okolnostmi jejího vzniku, prvním uvedením, je doplněn o dobovou kritickou reflexi a sumarizuje všechna provedení operního dramatu na české a československé scéně. Dále obsahuje hudební a literární reflexi díla s dílčími částmi, které uvádějí postavy do historického kontextu, komparují texty básně Williama Shakespeara s libretem Ronalda Duncana a okrajově se zabývají i psychologickou charakteristikou ženských postav. Stěžejní je třetí oddíl, který obsahuje interpretační rozbor vybraných specifických, vokálně dramatických aspektů ženských postav opery.

Abstract:

The main focus of the thesis is on the female operatic characters in Benjamin Britten's opera, The Rape of Lucretia. The goal of this work is to provide a comprehensive summary of the interpretive aspects of vocal dramatic expression that can be used in studying and performing individual characters on stage. The first section of the thesis provides an overview of the composer's life and compositional milestones, with a particular emphasis on his vocal work. The second section is dedicated to The Rape of Lucretia and explores the circumstances surrounding its creation and initial performance. It includes contemporary critical reflections and summarizes all performances of the opera drama on Czech and Czechoslovakian stages. This section also contains a musical and literary reflection of the work, with sub-parts that introduce the characters into a historical context, compare the texts of the poem by William Shakespeare with the libretto by Ronald Duncan, and partially deal with the psychological characteristics of the female characters. The third and most important section of the thesis is an interpretive analysis of specific, vocally dramatic aspects of the opera's female characters.
