Imaginative Geographies: A Study and Discussion of the Concept

Abstract:

Tato práce je teoretické pojednání o konceptu imaginativních geografií. Opírá se především o dílo literárního kritika Edwarda Saida a geografa Dereka Gregoryho. Práce nejprve obsahuje teoretický rozbor konceptu. Imaginativní geografie jsou představeny jako ideologické obrazy a představy vzdálených míst, které reprodukují zejména jinakost těchto míst i lidí, kteří na nich žijí. Klíčová je pro ně binární opozice mezi „naším“ západním, moderním a civilizovaným prostorem a „jejich“ nezápadním, nemoderním a zaostalým prostorem. Za prvé, imaginativní geografie vyjadřují koloniální nostalgii ve vztazích mezi západním a nezápadním. Za druhé, imaginativní geografie překládají nezápadní prostor do západních prostorových termínů. Za třetí, imaginativní geografie tvoří prostory konstruované viditelnosti. Za čtvrté, imaginativní geografie zvětšují rozestup mezi žitými světy lidí na Západě a lidí mimo Západ. Za páté, imaginativní geografie kromě dělení na „náš“ a „jejich“ prostor vytvářejí i šedou zónu vymístění a neurčitosti. Za šesté, imaginativní geografie jsou performativní. Následují dvoje diskuze imaginativních geografií s koncepty z jiných geografických tradic. Nejprve diskuze s postmoderními geografiemi podle Edwarda Soji. Zde jsou imaginativní geografie představeny jako koncept, který umožňuje klást do popředí prostorovost v sociální teorii. Imaginativní geografie jsou skutečné-i-imaginované a lze pomocí nich pracovat s epistemologií Žitého prostoru. Druhou je diskuze imaginativních geografií s morálními geografiemi. Deskriptivní etika morálních geografií upozorňuje na to, že pro imaginativní geografie je klíčová práce s morálními hranicemi a že lidé uvnitř imaginativních geografií mohou být vnímáni jako doslova zakořeněni ve svém prostředí. Normativní etika morálních geografií upozorňuje na otázku chudých a strádajících lidí uvnitř imaginativních geografií a na problematiku našeho zájmu jim nějakým způsobem pomoci. Nakonec práce představuje empirickou aplikaci konceptu v českém prostředí: příklad imaginativních geografií Číny a příklad imaginativních geografií subsaharské Afriky.

Abstract:

This thesis is a theoretical essay about the concept of imaginative geographies. It mostly draws on the work of literary critic Edward Said and geographer Derek Gregory. At first, the thesis involves a theoretical study of the concept. Imaginative geographies are described as ideological images and conceptions of distant places that reproduce the Otherness of these places as well as their inhabitants. A binary opposition is crucial here: the one between “our” Western, modern and civilized space and “their” non-Western, non-modern and undeveloped space. Firstly, imaginative geographies imply a colonial nostalgia in relations between the West and the Rest. Secondly, imaginative geographies translate non-Western space into Western spatial terms. Thirdly, imaginative geographies produce spaces of constructed visibility. Fourthly, imaginative geographies enlarge a gap between lived worlds of people in the West and people outside the West. Fifthly, imaginative geographies not only divide between “our” and “their” space, but also create a grey zone of displacement and indefinableness. Sixthly and lastly, imaginative geographies are performative. Two discussions of imaginative geographies with concepts from other geographical traditions follow. The first one is with postmodern geographies of Edward Soja. Imaginative geographies are described as a concept empowering the spatiality of the social theory. They are real-and-imagined and it is possible to work with the epistemology of Lived Space through them. The other discussion focuses on a relation of imaginative geographies with moral geographies. Morally geographical descriptive ethics calls attention to a crucial role of moral boundaries and to a problem of people being literally rooted in their environment inside imaginative geographies. Morally geographical normative ethics calls attention to a question of poor and miserable people inside imaginative geographies and to a problem of our concern to care about them. In the end, the thesis shows an empirical application of the concept in the Czech setting: an example of imaginative geographies of China and an example of imaginative geographies of sub-Saharan Africa.
