Business letter as type of text. An exploration of specific features and a phraseological analysis

Abstract:

The dissertation thesis titled Business Letter as a type of text, its features and a phraseological analysis (original title: Textsorte Geschäftsbrief. Textsortenspezifische und Untersuchungen phraseologische) deals with current trends in German business correspondence and German business letter as the key instrument of written communication in business. The whole work draws on lexical resources, especially phraseological units, which are significant for the modern business letter. The aim of this work is to describe and point out the specific phraseology for business correspondence and distinguish colloquial idioms from the professional idioms, mainly on the basis of categorization and classification of major researchers in the field of phraseology, with Fleischer´s morpho-syntactic classification of idioms and the "Zentrum-Peripherie-Modell" Fleischer being the foundation stone. A particular attention is given to phraseological units, known as teil-idiomatisch (partly idiomatic) or nichtidiomatisch (non-idiomatic), which include collocations, verbal idioms (including Funktionsverbgefuge), pragmatic idioms (especially "Routinenformeln") and other lexical means within the phraseological field. Besides the lexical level, this thesis attempts to provide a comprehensive picture of a German business letter, which is being analysed in terms of its integration into the communication process amongst various business companies and in terms of its evolution from a classical letter, a fax, to an e-mail, which is the form discussed in more detail as the most common means of written communication. An e-mail is also compared with the traditional letter and other forms of modern communication. A special chapter is devoted to the business letter as the type of text (Textsorte) from the perspective of text linguistics. Also technical language of economics and business, its classification and inclusion of this kind of language into specialised German as such is a part of the thesis.

Disertační práce s názvem Textsorte Geschäftsbrief. Textsortenspezifische und phraseologische Untersuchungen se zabývá současnými tendencemi německé obchodní korespondence a německým obchodním dopisem jakožto hlavním prostředkem písemné komunikace v obchodním styku. Celá práce klade důraz na lexikální prostředky charakteristické pro moderní obchodní dopis, a to především na frazeologismy, které jsou hlavním tématem práce, jejímž cílem je popsat a poukázat na frazeologismy specifické pro obchodní korespondenci a rozlišit frazeologismy hovorové od odborných. Základem je přitom kategorizace a klasifikace významných badatelů z oblasti frazeologie, přičemž výchozí je Fleischerova morfologicko-syntaktická klasifikace frazeologismů a jeho „Zentrum-Peripherie-Modell“. Zvláštní pozornost je věnována frazeologismům označovaným jako teil-idiomatisch nebo nichtidiomatisch, ke kterým patří kolokace, verbální frazeologismy (vč. Funktionsverbgefüge), pragmatické frazeologismy (především „Routinenformeln“) a další lexikální prostředky spadající do oblasti frazeologie. Vedle lexikální roviny se práce zaměřuje na vytvoření uceleného pohledu na německý obchodní dopis, který je zde zkoumán z hlediska jeho začlenění do komunikačního procesu realizovaného mezi firmami a také z hlediska jeho vývoje od klasického dopisu, přes fax až po e-mail, o němž je zde pojednáno podrobněji jako o nejběžnější formě písemné komunikace. E-Mail je zde rovněž srovnán s tradičním dopisem a s ostatními formami moderní komunikace. Samostatná kapitola je věnována obchodnímu dopisu jako typu textu (Textsorte) z pohledu textové lingvistiky, část práce se zabývá odborným jazykem z oblasti ekonomiky a obchodu, jeho klasifikací a začleněním v rámci odborného jazyka obecně.
