Abstract:

Disertační práce nesoucí název „In the Wake of Atrocity: A Comparative Study of Native American and African American Narratives of Trauma“ je srovnáním šesti románů reprezentujících literaturu původních obyvatel Spojených států amerických a literaturu afroamerickou z pohledu teorie traumatu. Konkrétně se jedná o romány Solar Storms Lindy Hogan, Indian Killer Shermana Alexieho a Ghost Singer Anny Lee Walters reprezentující literaturu původních amerických obyvatel a Corregidora Gayl Jones, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman Ernesta Gainese a Push autorky Sapphire ilustrující tvorbu afroamerickou. Mnou zvolených šest textů je možno číst jako narativy traumatu, čímž tyto výrazně rozšiřují nejen samotný kánon literatury traumatu, ale i jeho pojetí ve sféře literární kritiky. První kapitola práce je věnována konceptu traumatu a jeho do jisté míry odlišnému chápání v oblastech psychoanalýzy, psychologie a literárních studií. Kapitola se primárně zaměřuje na zdůraznění rozdílu mezi traumatem v obecné rovině a jeho diagnosticky specifickou variantou ve formě posttraumatické stresové poruchy (posttraumatic stress disorder či PTSD). Definici posttraumatické stresové poruchy považuji za zvláště důležitou. Většina textových analýz následujících dvou kapitol je totiž vedena přesvědčením o vpisování psychologických mechanismů traumatu do narativních postupů textů. Texty se tak vyznačují výraznou fragmentárností a porušením linearity vyprávění na straně jedné a jeho kruhovostí na straně druhé. První kapitola dále představuje specifické modifikace traumatu navržené pro potřeby kultury původního amerického obyvatelstva a kultury afroamerické. Psychologové hovoří o historické traumatizaci většiny původních obyvatel pramenící z mnoha staletí přítomnosti (neo)kolonialismu na území dnešních Spojených států či o takzvané „zraněné duši“ (the soul wound). Naproti tomu je trauma v afroamerické kultuře pojímáno ve vcelku jasně vymezených hranicích instituce otroctví, kdy teoretikové hovoří o „odkazu otroctví“ (the legacy of slavery). Jak konkrétní textové analýzy ukazují, koncept „zraněné duše“ je aplikovatelný jak v oblasti psychologie tak také v literární kritice. U „odkazu otroctví“ je však potřeba poukázat na jeho nedostatečnou schopnost postihnout komplexnost afroamerické historické traumatizace. Druhá kapitola nabízí juxtapozici tří textů literatury původních obyvatel, Solar Storms Lindy Hogan, Indian Killer Shermana Alexieho a Ghost Singer Anny Lee Walters. Každý z těchto textů je symbolickou reprezentací určitého příkladu nepráví, ať již minulého či stále ještě přetrvávajícího, spáchaného na původním obyvatelstvu evropskými osadníky a později americkou vládou a společností. Konkrétně se jedná o otázku ohrožení životního prostředí a ekosystémů v Solar Storms, o problematiku přesídlování většiny původního obyvatelstva do rezervací v devatenáctém století a do měst v polovině století dvacátého v Indian Killer, a o situaci okolo stále ještě probíhající repatriace tělesných ostatků a ceremoniálních předmětů v Ghost Singer. Z pohledu vypravěčských postupů volí každý autor specifický způsob ztvárnění těchto traumat. Linda Hogan využívá opakujících se metafor lidského těla, které jednotně připisuje živoucím subjektům i neživoucím objektům v postupu, který nazývám „somatizací“ (somatization). Tímto naznačuje srovnatelnou zranitelnost lidských a nelidských složek přírody a jejich společnou náklonnost k traumatu. Román Shermana Alexieho využívá metafor inter-etnické adopce a bezdomovectví, které mu slouží jako základní alegorie pro zpodobnění traumatu vysídlení a nucených přesunů původních obyvatel. Ste

jně tak jeho román využívá techniky, která by se dala nazvat „vytlačením“ (displacement). Ta slouží jako základní organizační princip následnosti kapitol i jednotlivých obrazů v jejich rámci. Poslední z textů této kapitoly, román Anny Lee Walters, interpretuji z pohledu charakterizace postav. Na té autorka demonstruje schopnost historického traumatu redefinovat dichotomii utlačovaných a utlačovatelů a zapříčinit její rozpad. Také afroameričtí spisovatelé vybráni pro třetí kapitolu, Gayl Jones v románu Corregidora, Ernest Gaines v textu The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman a Sapphire v Push, odkrývají dávná i současná traumata afroamerické společnosti. Avšak dle mé interpretace se tato neomezují pouze na instituci otroctví, jak někteří kritici navrhují (LaCapra; Carby). Autoři spíše zdůrazňují kontinuitu rasové ideologie, kterou je možno označit za primární trauma afroamerické kultury následně se odrážející v její literární tvorbě. Spolu s prezentací variací na téma rasové předpojatosti dominantního amerického obyvatelstva, texty Gayl Jones, Ernesta Gainese a Sapphire zkoumají specifičnosti subjektivního vnímání traumatu a posttraumatických stavů. Argumentuji, že paralela mezi útlakem brazilského otroctví a partnerským násilím v afroamerických rodinách ve dvacátém století slouží Gayl Jones jako místo po zdůraznění zvláštnosti vnímání času a časovosti u obětí traumatu. Text Ernesta Gainese je možno chápat jako narativ ve formě svědectví traumatu, tedy ve formě jednoho ze základních teoretických konceptů traumatu. Spolu se zpodobněním kruhovitosti a repetice vlastní psychologickému traumatu, Ernest Gaines prezentuje čtenáři text, ve kterém je trauma rasové nesnášenlivosti odkrýváno díky interakci posluchače a vypravěče složitého procesu svědectví. Narativ který nejexplicitněji odmítá kauzalitu mezi historickou institucí otroctví a možnou současnou (psycho)patologií některých složek afroamerického obyvatelstva je Push spisovatelky Sapphire. Její román se výhradně soustřeďuje na traumatický potenciál současných společenských institucí, jakými jsou zdravotní a sociální služby nebo školství, a traumatizaci plynoucí z nevšímavosti většinové společnosti. Jako je Push ráznou kritikou současné americké společnosti, je i explorací na téma nemožnosti dostatečně sdílet zkušenost traumatu (the (un)narratability of trauma). V závěru je možno říct, že všech šest textů ukazuje možné traumatogenní aspekty plynoucí z historického setkávání americké většinové kultury s kulturami menšinovými. Tím, že autoři vystavují čtenáře utrpení a traumatům svých postav, je vyzývají, aby přehodnotili své vnímání jiného (other) a skutečnými činy se zasloužili o snížení příhod s podobně traumatogenními důsledky. Jedině takovým způsobem je možno doufat v budoucnost ve jménu tolerance, právní, environmentální a společenské spravedlnosti a lidství.

Abstract:

The dissertation is a comparative study of six novels by Native American and African American writers through the analytical framework of trauma. In particular, the dissertation focuses on Linda Hogan’s Solar Storms, Sherman Alexie’s Indian Killer and Anna Lee Walters’s Ghost Singer, representing Native American literary production, and Gayl Jones’s Corregidora, Ernest Gaines’s The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and Sapphire’s Push, representing African American writing. The six texts offer themselves as narratives of trauma by which they extend not only the canon of trauma literature but also the canon’s very perception in the domain of literary criticism. The first chapter functions as an overview of the historical and contemporary discussions pervading trauma discourse. It contextualizes psychological trauma from a historical perspective and provides a diachronic summary of the zeniths that the research of trauma in psychology and psychoanalysis has experienced since the middle of the nineteenth century. Moreover, this chapter also elaborates on the encounter between psychological trauma and literature, emphasizing the prevalent narrative techniques that critics commonly identify in texts of trauma. In its second half, the chapter addresses in detail the concepts of the soul wound and the legacy of slavery, two theoretical categories developed for the purposes of psychological diagnosis and cultural analysis of Native American and African American trauma, respectively. The second chapter offers a juxtaposition of Hogan’s Solar Storms, Alexie’s Indian Killer and Walters’s Ghost Singer, each of the novels being a symbolic representation of the various instances of oppression and injustice perpetrated against the indigenous populations of the United States. Namely, Solar Storms depicts the trauma of environmental devastation that emerges as a consequence of the ecosystemic mistreatment in both the past and present; Indian Killer presents and criticizes the policy of multiple relocations of Native American peoples onto reservations in the nineteenth century and to the urban areas of major American cities in the 1950s; whereas Ghost Singer portrays the ongoing struggles of Native American communities to repatriate the ceremonial objects and ancestral bodily remains appropriated and continuously held by American cultural institutions such as the museums and universities. The chapter demonstrates that each author selects a specific narrative technique in order to narrate these incidents as traumas of Native American culture. Linda Hogan’s consistent employment of the trope of a vulnerable human body, in a strategy which I term somatization, signifies a susceptibility to traumatization equally experienced by the land and the human and nonhuman subjects that inhabit it. In Alexie’s novel, two fundamental metaphors which embody the trauma of historical displacement are those of inter-ethnic adoption and homeless. Moreover, I also demonstrate that a narrative technique of displacement serves as the formal organizing principle of Alexie’s text. I interpret the last novel of the second chapter, Anna Lee Walters’s Ghost Singer, through the prism of the author’s characterization. In presenting the novel’s characters as victims and beneficiaries of the (neo)colonial project, the writer undermines the allegedly clear-cut dichotomy of the victim and the perpetrator which is deeply embedded in trauma discourse. The African American writers selected for the third chapter, likewise, uncover past and present traumas of African American cultural experience. However, the traumas that Gayl Jones’s Corregidora, Ernest Gaines’s The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and Sapphire’s Push narrate do not limit themselves to the historical occurrence of slavery as some critics argue. ma of African American culture inscribing itself on the culture’s literary production. While displaying the detrimental effects of the trauma induced by racial bias, Corregidora, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and Push also function as powerful explorations of the psychology of trauma itself. The parallel between the sexual exploitation sanctioned by Brazilian slavery and the domestic violence in some African American families in the second half of the twentieth century offer Jones a site to illustrate the conflated temporality of trauma and of subjective posttraumatic states. Gaines’s novel can be read as assuming the form of a trauma testimony, that is one of the fundamental categories of trauma discourse. While depicting the circularity and repetition inherent in the experience of trauma, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman operates as a text in which the trauma of racial prejudice emerges through the testimonial process engaging the victim and her listener. Sapphire’s Push is the novel which most explicitly refutes a direct causality between the historical institution of slavery and any potential contemporary (psycho)pathology of African American population. Push concentrates exclusively on the traumatogenic potential generated by present-day social institutions such as the systems of healthcare, social security and education. As much as Push is a fierce criticism of the systemic neglect of American society toward African Americans, it is also an eloquent witness to the (un)narratability of trauma. All the six texts introduce some facets of the traumatogenic potential characteristic of the encounters between European American society and Native American and/or African American cultures. In confronting the readers with trauma and its implications, the writers ask the reading subjects to participate in others’ suffering and to reclaim their own humanity. The six authors chosen for this dissertation thus join the ranks of the many artists, activists and public figures who call for a future devoid of traumatogenic stress, marked instead by tolerance and legal, environmental, and social justice.
