Anaerobic degradation of plant material with high content of lignin and its use in biogas transformations

Abstract:

Lignocelulózová biomasa představuje hojně se vyskytující, obnovitelný a nízkonákladový zdroj energie, který má velký potenciál při výrobě bioenergie a biopaliv. Heterogenní komplex celulózy, hemicelulózy a ligninu hraje důležitou roli ve výstavbě buněčné stěny rostlinných buněk a zároveň je chrání před atakem mikroorganismů a oxidativním stresem. Odolná struktura lignocelulózy je však limitujícím faktorem pro využití rostlinné biomasy při procesu vzniku bioplynu. Špatná přístupnost mikroorganismů k lignocelulóze při procesu anaerobní fermentace je důvod pro zavedení procesu předúpravy biomasy. Předúprava biomasy umožňuje štěpení vazeb mezi jednotlivými složkami lignocelulózy a následný přístup enzymů k substrátu. Biomasu lze upravovat chemicky i fyzikálně, avšak tyto metody mohou být často energeticky náročné, finančně nákladné nebo toxické pro životní prostředí. Alternativu k těmto způsobům předúprav představuje biologická předúprava, která využívá lignocelulolytických mikroorganismů a enzymů. Kvalita a množství vznikajícího bioplynu závisí na mnoha faktorech (typ zvoleného substrátu, velikost částic, zvolený typ předúpravy, chemicko-fyzikální podmínky ve fermentoru atd.) Pro maximalizaci jeho vzniku je tak nutné znát vliv jednotlivých faktorů a snažit se o optimalizaci podmínek ve fermentoru a způsobu předúpravy.

Abstract:

Lignocellulosic biomass represents an abundant, low-cost and renewable source of energy which has an enormous potential in the production of bioenergy and biofuels. Lignocellulose is a heterogeneous complex of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin which plays an important part in formation of plants cell walls and their protection against microbial attack and oxidative stress. The recalcitrant properties of its structure are a limiting factor in the use of plant biomass in biogas production. The limited accessibility of lignocellulose by microorganisms is the main reason for the need of a pretreatment of biomass. The pretreatment causes breaking of the linkages between each component which allows the access of hydrolytic enzymes to the substrate. Biomass can be pretreated by chemical and physical preteratment which can have high financial and energy demands and can be enviromentally toxic. An alternative to these methods is a biological pretreatment by lignocellulolytic microorganisms and enzymes. The quality and quantity of the biogas depends on several factors (e.g. type of substrate, partical size, type of pretreatment, psysical-chemical properties of the enviroment in digester, etc.) It is important to know the effects of each factor and to try to optimize the conditions in the digester.
