Relationship between antibiotic treatment in early childhood and the development of obesity in children and adolescents

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce shrnuje současné poznatky o vztahu užívání antibiotik v raném dětství a rozvoji nadváhy a obezity v pozdějším věku. Teoretická část je věnována dětské obezitě, její epidemiologii, komplikacím, pozdním následkům a také etiopatogenetickým faktorům. Dále se práce věnuje antibiotikům jako potenciálnímu rizikovému faktoru dětské obezity, vlivu antibiotik na tělesnou hmotnost i mechanismům, kterými by mohla způsobovat změny v tělesném složení. Zahrnuta jsou také rizika obezity související s prenatální expozicí antibiotik. V praktické části byla sledována asociace mezi užíváním antibiotik v časném dětství a pozdějším zvýšením z-skóre pro BMI v 15 letech. Analyzovaná data pochází z kohortové Evropské longitudinální studie těhotenství a dětství (ELSPAC).

Abstract:

The master's thesis summarizes current knowledge about the use of antibiotics in early childhood and its connection with the development of overweight and obesity in later life. The theoretical part is focused on childhood obesity. Its epidemiology, complications, later consequences, and also etiopathogenetic factors. It is also concerned with the use of antibiotics as a potential risk factor for childhood obesity – describing their effects on body weight and mechanisms by which they may cause changes in body composition. In the practical part, the association between the use of antibiotics in early childhood and the increase of BMI z-score at 15 years of age was investigated. The analyzed data come from the European Longitudinal Study of Pregnancy and Childhood (ELSPAC) cohort study.
