The burden on informal carers of patient with mental disorder

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem diplomové práce bylo zmapovat zátěž laických pečovatelů v péči o pacienta s psychotickou poruchou. Dále pak zjistit, jaké kroky vedly pečovatele ke zmírnění zátěže a zmapovat změny, které při poskytování péče nastaly. Metodika: Výzkum probíhal pomocí interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy textu. Výzkumná data byla sbírána od 9 participantů na základě polostrukturovaných rozhovorů, které byly realizovány od října 2022 do února roku 2023. Jednotlivé výpovědi byly zaznamenány na diktafon a doslovně přepsány do textové podoby. Poté následovala podrobná obsahová analýza textu. Výsledky: Na základě analýzy byly formulovány 3 kategorie: zátěž pečovatelů, změna života a úskalí péče, které zachycují život pečovatelů při péči o nemocného s psychotickou poruchou. Ze získaných dat bylo zřejmé, že zátěž, kterou na sebe pečovatelé berou, je patrná v jejich každodenním životě, a nese s sebou řadu úskalí. Fyzickou i psychickou zátěž uvedlo všech 9 participantů. Tato zátěž se dotýká nejenom participantů, ale i jejich blízkých, kteří jsou díky péči o nemocného s psychotickou poruchou, v pozadí zájmu pečovatelů. Všech 9 participantů uvedlo dopad péče i na jejich blízké. Závěr: Pečovatelé popisovali mnoho negativních dopadů, které jsou způsobeny péčí o blízkého s psychotickou poruchou. Jako jednu z častých možností, jak si v rámci svých pečovatelských povinností ulevit, zaznělo alespoň krátkodobé vyvázání se z pečovatelských povinností, a sdílení svých pečovatelských povinností s druhou osobou, aby tak mohli načerpat potřebnou energii. Díku tomu se péče o nemocného stává kvalitnější a méně zatěžující.

Abstract:

Aim: The aim of this thesis is to chart the burden of laic caregivers when providing care for a patient suffering from a psychotic disorder. Moreover, to find out what steps led to the mitigation of the burden and chart changes in the provided care. Methodology: The research was carried out by using an interpretive phenomenological analysis of the text. Data were obtained from nine participants during half-structured interviews from October 2022 to February 2023. The answers were recorded to Dictaphone and transcribed verbatim into text. Then followed a detailed analysis of the text content. Results: There have been three categories formulated based on the performed analysis, the burden for caregivers, the change of life, and risks of care which capture caregivers' life during providing care to someone with a psychotic disorder. Based on the received data, the caregivers' burden is noticeable in their everyday life and brings several pitfalls. All nine participants mentioned physical and mental burdens that relate not only to the participants but also to their loved ones who are moved to the background of caregivers' interest because the participants care for someone with a psychotic disorder. All nine participants have mentioned that the provided care has an impact on their loved ones. Conclusion: Caregivers have described many negative impacts caused by caring for a loved one with a psychotic disorder. One of the possibilities for relieving from caring duties has been mentioned to drop the duties at least for a while and to share the duties with another person so that caregivers can get the necessary energy back. The quality of the care increases and is less burdensome thanks to that.
