The Language of Byzantine Romance of 14th and 15th Centuries

Abstract:

Práce představuje detailní analýzu a srovnání jazyka čtyř anonymních veršovaných milostných románů (Kallimachos a Chrysorrhoé, Belthandros a Chrysantza, Flórios a Platziaflóra a Imberios a Margaróna) pocházejících ze 14. a 15. století. Jedná se o soubor děl sepsaných jazykem, jehož základ tvoří hovorová řeč, ale který je zároveň ovlivněný tradičním archaizujícím literárním jazykem. Proto je jazyk románů v předkládané práci popisován v zásadě diferenčně: jsou zkoumány rozdíly oproti hovorovému jazyku té doby i rozdíly mezi jednotlivými romány, ale také jevy, které jsou pro jazyk těchto románů typické. U konkrétních jevů je přihlíženo také k předchozím fázím jejich vývoje, či fázím, které vedly od archaických tvarů až k tvarům současným. V práci je pozornost věnována relativní frekvenci užití archaických a progresivních tvarů a vlivu metriky na jejich konkrétní výběr a dále závěrům týkajícím se míry ovlivnění jazyka románů cizími vzory a určení místa vzniku jednotlivých románů.

Abstract:

The thesis represents a detailed analysis and comparison of the language of four anonymous romances (Callimachus and Chrysorrhoe, Velthandros and Chrysantza, Phlorios and Platziaphlore and Imperios and Margarona) of the 14th and 15th centuries. Together these form a set of works which are based on the vernacular, but at the same time have been influenced by the traditional literary language with its archaisms. The language of the romances is therefore described in this study essentially with an eye to differentiation. Specifically, the focus is on the differences between the spoken language of the time and the language of the novels and on differences between the individual novels, but also on phenomena typical of the language of these romances. Specific phenomena are considered in the context of the preceding phases of their development, i.e. the phases that led from archaic forms to present forms. The study looks at the relative frequency of the use of archaic and progressive forms and the influence of metre in determining which were chosen at specific points, and considers the degree to which the language of the novels is influenced by foreign models as well as the question of where each individual novel was written.
