Abstract:

The thesis provides a broad insight into the area of system integration. In Chapter 1 the critical success factors of integration projects are discussed together with issues that author identified as impacts of globalization on large scale IT projects. Chapter 2 provides comprehensive overview of technologies and best practices in the area of system integration. Author categorizes the broad area of application integration to the four layers to break it down to the isolated layers with reasonable complexity. Technologies acting as enabler middleware for integration are compound to The Integration Platform. Author defines The Integration Platform as a set of middleware technologies which can be used for enterprise application integration. In Chapter 3 author discusses selected issues of system integration to which he has never found any appropriate elaborated material. The selected issues are divided into three sections. The major discussion on technical issues is aimed at canonical formats and the integration repository. The non-technical issues are discussed as well. Namely, author expresses his opinion on software architectures, management of large scale projects and business process modeling. Chapter 3 defines also the methodology of adoption of a new paradigm of software development and integration the Service oriented architecture (SOA) - into the enterprise. SOA adoption methodology defines a set of governance bodies and activities which author considers necessary to be performed on the way to the service-oriented enterprise. Chapter 4 applies the introduced concepts and shows by example the sample of sophisticated business process integration. The example is trivial but it demonstrates the concepts and use of defined SOA methodology. Chapter 4 also provides high level insight into standards in the area of web services and standardized middleware for service oriented architecture. Finally, the thesis is based on solid foundations which are expanded further by author. The thesis provides broad overview and expects that introduced topics can be explored more in the future research.
