Affiliative relationships among ungulate females

Abstract:

Přátelské interakce (dále označované jako kamarádství) jsou charakteristickým znakem lidského chování, ale vyskytují se i u jiných živočichů. Kamarádství mezi dvěmi (či více) samicemi kopytníků bývá definováno na základě kamarádských interakcí (allogrooming, hra) a jiných kamarádských projevů (vzájemným očicháním, přátelským kontaktem, prostorovou blízkostí, následováním a společným žraní). Tyto kamarádské interakce a kamarádské projevy, lze odlišit od projevů nekamarádského chování (agresivní a reproduktivní interakce). Dále závisí alespoň částečně na paměti a emocích daného jedince. Kamarádství ovlivňuje celá řada ať už emocionálních faktorů, které v současné chvíli ještě neumíme zcela měřit, či fyzických faktorů, které ovšem měřit umíme. Jako nejdůležitější fyzické faktory, které ovlivňují kamarádství u samic kopytníků, považujeme sociální postavení, věk, příbuznost, reprodukční stav či dobu, po kterou se dvě samice znají. Dále změnu ekologických faktorů (potravy a vody), prostředí, sezónní faktory nebo míru rizika predace daných samic a jejich skupin/stád (dále jen skupin). Výskyt a udržování kamarádství mezi samicemi kopytníků bylo ve většině studií pozorováno zejména mezi vrstevnicemi a příbuznými samicemi (většina studií byla pozorována u skupin samic, které byly navzájem příbuzné). Kamarádství přináší samicím značné výhody i nevýhody, kdy přímé, ale i nepřímé výhody musí převyšovat náklady a nevýhody, které musí samice investovat do kamarádství. Jinak je kamarádství pro danou samici nevýhodné, snižuje její fitness a většinou zaniká. Samice kopytníků mají díky kamarádství lepší přístup ke zdrojům potravy, stanovišti (kde jsou vystavené nejmenší míře predace), pomáhají si také s péčí a výchovou mláďat, snižuje se u nich hladina stresu. Což v důsledku vede k lepšímu reprodukčnímu úspěchu samic, nižším energetickým nákladům na každodenní aktivity, delšímu životu daných samic, tudíž k lepšímu fitness daných samic. Nicméně tvorba a udržování kamarádských vztahů mezi samicemi, přináší samicím i značné nevýhody. Zejména větší míru rizika šíření nemocí a parazitů mezi kamarádkami (zejména pak mezi příbuznými samicemi), vyšší míru příjmu agresivního chování ostatních členů skupiny (v případě nedostatku zdrojů potravy a vody), zvýšenou míru stresu plynoucí z odloučení dvou kamarádek. Kamarádství mezi samicemi kopytníků bylo sledováno u samic (jejich skupin), které žily v zajetí. Do současné doby bylo kamarádství mezi samicemi kopytníků popsáno u dvaceti druhů. Navrhuji, aby se budoucí výzkum kamarádství mezi samicemi kopytníků zaměřit zejména na zkoumání kamarádství mezi nepříbuznými samicemi, a na emocionální faktory, které vedou ke vzniku kamarádství. Dále bych kladla větší důraz na výzkum kamarádství mezi samicemi žijících ve svém přirozeném prostředí (i když si jsem vědoma toho, jak je tento způsob výzkumu komplikovaný). V neposlední řadě bych se také v budoucnu zaměřila na výzkum kamarádství mezi druhy kopytníků, u kterých tento typ chování ještě nebyl pozorován (velbloudi, prasata, lamy aj.).

Abstract:

Affiliative relationships (hereinafter referred to as a friendship) are characteristic for humans, however, such a relationship can occur even among other animals. A friendship between two (or more) female ungulates can be described by amicable interactions (e.g. allogrooming, play) or various amicable expressions (mutual sniffling, friendly contact, nearest neighbour, following, cofeeding). Such amicable interactions and amicable expressions are differentiated from the expressions of unfriendly behaviour (agonistic and reproductive interactions). Also, it partially depends on a memory and emotions of a particular individual. The friendship is affected by a series of various factors, whether they are emotional ones which we are not able to study them completely yet, or physical factors which we naturally can study. The most significant physical factors which have an impact on the friendship of female ungulates are considered to be a dominance rank, age, kinship, reproductivity of the females and the period during witch two females have known. In most studies the occurrence and maintaining of friendship between female ungulates was mainly observed between the female peers and female relatives (groups/herds of females which were related to each other, were being observed in most studies). The friendship brings some prominent advantages as well as some disadvantages to the female ungulates where the direct and indirect advantages must exceed disadvantages and effort that has to be invested in friendship by females. Otherwise, the friendship is not beneficial for the female, it decreases her physical condition and in most cases she deceases. Due to the friendship, the female ungulates have better access to food resources, to a territory (where the existence of predation is minimal); they help each other with taking care and upbringing of their youngs; the stress scale reduces. It leads to a more successful reproduction, to a lower energy output during everyday activities, a longer life span; thus their physical condition improves. Nevertheless, with an intention of forming and cultivating friendly relations, there are also some significant disadvantages for the females; particularly, for example, a high rate of spreading diseases and parasites among the female friends (especially among the female relatives), more struggles with other group members behaving aggressively (when there is a shortage of food and water resources), an elevated stress scale cause by separation of two female friends and so on. The research on the friendship between the female ungulates was primarily conducted among the females and their groups/herds which had been living in captivity. So far the friendship was described in twenty species of female ungulates. I suggest that the future research should be mainly focusing on the unrelated female ungulates and on emotional factors that help establish the bond of friendship. Furthermore, I would like to put emphasis on studying the friendship between the females that live in their natural habitat (I am aware of how much this method is complex). Lastly, I would like to focus on studying the friendship between other species of ungulates in which this type of behaviour has not been studies yet (such as camels, pigs, llamas etc.).
