Míra extrémní chudoby v subsaharské Africe se dlouhodobě pohybuje okolo hranice 50 %. OSN v roce 2000 spustila iniciativu Rozvojové cíle tisíciletí, která má přispět ke snížení nejen extrémní chudoby. Jedním z cílu tohoto projektu OSN je snížit o polovinu mezi roky 1990 a 2015 podíl obyvatel žijících za méně než jeden dolar na den. Abstract:
The rate of extreme poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa has been about 50 % for a long time. In 2000 United Nations started initiative called Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which should help to lower extreme poverty. Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people whose income is less than 1 dollar a day is one of the Millennium Development Goals´ targets.
