"Poets are Damned...but See with the Eyes of Angels": The Development of Allen Ginsberg's Work

Abstract:

This thesis analyses selected parts of Allen Ginsberg?s poems. It examines the development during his career as well as the change of his point of view regarding society and his role as a poet in it. The thesis concludes that the poems written in the course of 1950-1960 are more focused on political issues rather than the poems written after the year 1990 where he is still talking about political matters but his attitude is more conciliatory. His poems are the classic example of his idea expressing the essential mission of the poetry in general ? to reduce pain in this world.

Abstract:

Tato práce analyzuje vybrané úryvky básní Allena Ginsberga. Zabývá se tím, jak se jeho tvorba vyvíjela v průběhu jeho umělecké kariéry stejně tak jako se měnil jeho pohled na společnost a jeho úlohu v ní jakožto básníka. Práce dochází k závěru, že básně napsané v období 1950-1960 jsou více politicky zaměřené, než básně napsané po roce 1990, kde sice stále zmiňuje politická témata, ale mluví o nich mnohem smířlivěji. Jeho básně jsou klasickým příkladem toho, co je podle něj posláním poezie ? zmírnit bolest na tomto světě.
