Differences between action and state oriented people during the induction of the ego depletion effect

Abstract:

Dřívější studie ukazují, že činnostně orientovaní lidé na rozdíl od stavově orientovaných překonávají efekt ego-depletion. Může to být způsobené tím, že se svým zdrojem sebekontroly nakládají odlišně. Tato korelační studie zkoumala na vzorku 64 participantů (21 mužů a 43 žen), jejichž průměrný věk byl 23,8 ± 5,9 let, zda mezi činnostně a stavově orientovanými lidmi existují fyziologické rozdíly při a před navozením efektu ego-depletion, které by odlišnost v nakládání se zdrojem sebekontroly zachytily. Sledovala rozdíly ve variabilitě srdeční frekvence (HRV) a krevního tlaku (BPV), které korelují s mírou sebekontroly, a také odráží aktivitu parasympatického a sympatického nervového systému. Přestože výzkumné hypotézy byly zamítnuty, podařilo se mezi činnostně a stavově orientovanými jedinci objevit rozdíly ve změnách HRV a BPV mezi měřením v klidu a pří úlohách zatěžujících sebekontrolu. Tyto změny svědčí o odlišnostech v tom, jak u činnostně a stavově orientovaných jedinců dochází k aktivaci parasympatického a sympatického nervového systému.

Abstract:

Previous research shows that action oriented people in contrast with state oriented people overcome the ego depletion effect. It may be caused by that they manage their resource of self-control differently. This correlation study examined on a sample of 64 participants (21 males and 43 females) whose mean age was 23.8 ± 5.9 years, whether there were physiological differences before and during the induction of the ego-depletion effect which would capture the distinction in the management of the resource of self-control. This study focused on differences in heart rate variability (HRV) and blood pressure variability (BPV) which correlate with a level of self-control and also reflect an activity of parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system. In spite of the fact that hypotheses were rejected, there were differences between action and state oriented people in changes of HRV and BPV between measurements in rest state and while working on self-control tasks. These changes suggest that there are differences between action and state oriented people in the activity of their parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system.
