The theme of migration in the election to the European parliament in Visegrád Group and its impact on the election results

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na analýzu voleb do Evropského parlamentu v roce 2019 v zemích tzv. Viségrádské čtyřky (V4). Hlavní výzkumnou otázkou práce je odpovědět na to, zda byl úspěch nových a populistických politických stran ve volbách do Evropského parlamentu (jako příkladu druhořadých voleb) ovlivněn významem, jež tyto strany ve své programatice a volební kampani věnovali tématu migrace. Druhořadé volby jsou obecně charakteristické několika specifiky (nižší míra participace voličů, vyšší úspěšnost neparlamentních a radikálních stran, vyšší úspěšnost nevládních stran apod.) a právě tato specifika mohou, spolu s odlišným mobilizačním apelem, stát za vyšší úspěšností nových a populistických stran v evropských volbách. Mimo analýzy voleb do Evropského parlamentu v roce 2019 bude součástí práce analýza předchozích parlamentních voleb v zemích V4 s cílem identifikovat odlišnou míru úspěšnosti nových a populistických politických stran mezi národními (prvořadými) a evropskými (druhořadými volbami) s cílem prokázat možný vliv migrace a dalších témat na výsledky voleb.

Abstract:

The thesis concerns an analysis of the elections to the European Parliament in 2019 in the Visegrad Group (V4). The main research question is to answer whether the success of new, populist and radical parties in the European elections (as an example of Second Order elections) was influenced by the importance that these parties dealt with the issue of migration in their programmes and election campaign. Secondary elections are generally characterised by several specifics (lower voter turnout, higher success of non-parliamentary and radical parties, higher success of non- governmental parties, etc.) and these specifics may, together with a different mobilisation appeal, be behind the higher success of these parties in European elections. Whether these expectations associated with the theory of the Second-order elections have been confirmed is the second stated aim of the work. In addition to the analysis of the European Parliament elections in 2019, the work will include an analysis of previous parliamentary elections in the V4 countries to identify the different success rates of new and populist political parties between national (primary) and European (secondary) elections to demonstrate the potential impact of migration and other issues on the election results.
