Motives of migration and strategies of integration of Czech and Slovak Roma living in British Sheffield.

Abstract:

Práce podává přehled o tom, jakým způsobem čeští a slovenští Romové žijící v Sheffieldu interpretují své motivy k migraci a jaké následně aplikují strategie pro integraci do hostitelské společnosti. Podkladem pro analýzu jsou dvě sady hloubkových rozhovorů, které byly realizovány v Sheffieldu v letech 2009 a 2010. Teoretickým východiskem práce byla teorie sociálních sítí spolu s perspektivou teorie transnacionální migrace. Samotný výzkum se řídil metodologií případové studie rodin s prvky biografického přístupu. Ukazuje se, že neustále se reformulující migrační motivy mají vliv na použité integrační strategie, mezi které patří především zisk uspokojujícího zaměstnání a zajištění vzdělání pro děti. Všechny oblasti začleňování jsou významně ovlivněny sociálními sítěmi, na kterých aktéři participují. Integrace do nové společnosti je utvářena charakterem transnacionální migrace, kdy se životní svět migrantů již nenachází v hranicích původního či nového domova, ale je identifikován jako transnacionální sociální pole, které tato místa propojuje. V závěru studie autorka popisuje percepci budoucnosti migrantů a představuje reformulované motivy migrace, které signifikantně reprezentují touhu migrujících po udržení vysokého sociálního statusu, kterého svých odchodem ze společnosti, jež je sociálně vylučovala, nabyli.

Abstract:

Presented paper gives an overview of how Czech and Slovak Roma people living in Sheffield interprete their motives for migration and what kind of integration strategies do they apply in a host society. Two sets of in-depth interviews which took place in Sheffield in May 2009 and July 2010 served as a baseline for an analysis. Study was outlined by a theoretical approach of social networks theory together with the transnational migration theory perspective. The research itself was conducted by case study methodology with a biographical method patterns. It was shown that continuously reformulated migration motives introduced by participants affect applied integration strategies among which we can primarily recognize efforts for achievements of employment and education for their children. All areas of integration are significantly influenced by social networks in which actors participate. Integration into a new society is shaped by characteristics of transnational migration. Migrant’s living world cannot be more found in borders of original or new home, but it is identified as transnational social field by which are those places connected. In a last part author describes migrant’s perception about their future lives and presents reinterpreted migration motives which significantly represent their desire for maintenance of high social status achieved by leaving original society by which they had been socially excluded.
