Effect of Immigration Laws on the Labor Market in the USA in period of 1920s

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá vlivem imigračních zákonů z let 1921 a 1924 na trh práce na území Spojených států amerických v období 20. let 20. století. Cílem práce je ověřit vědeckou hypotézu, jenž tvrdí, že: vydání těchto zákonů mělo zásadní vliv na trh práce a zvýšilo nezaměstnanost. Společně s hlavní hypotézou se autor práce snaží odpovědět na výzkumné otázky: s jakým cílem byly imigrační zákony zavedeny? Jak se reálné dopady lišily od zamýšlených? A v neposlední řadě: jakou míru restrikce přinesly tyto zákony s ohledem na předcházející vývoj imigrace a pracovní síly ve Spojených státech amerických? Pro získání potřebných dat a informací bylo využito odborných studií a statistických dat z vydaných pramenů. Na základě získaných informací a analýzy dat lze vytvořit závěr, že zavedení imigračních zákonů faktorem působícím zásadní změny na trhu práce. K významnému nárustu nezaměstnanosti však vlivem těchto zákonů nedošlo. Cílené dopady zákonů ze strany vlády USA lze hodnotit jako splněné.

Abstract:

The bachelor’s thesis examine the influence of immigration laws of 1921 and 1924 on the labor market in the United States of America in period of 1920s. The aim of the thesis was to verify the hypothesis that claims: enactment of the immigration laws of 1921 and 1924 had major impact on the labor market and increased unemployment. Alongside with the hypothesis author tries to answer research questions: in what purpose were the immigration laws introduced? How different was real impact of enactment of examined laws in contrast with the intended one? And last but not least: how restrictive were those laws in view of previous developments in immigration and the labor force in the United States of America? To obtain the necessary data and information, professional studies and statistical data from published sources were used. Based on the information obtained and data analysis, the enactment of immigration laws was a factor causing fundamental changes in the labor market. However, there was no significant increase in unemployment due to the law. I consider the targeted impact of the laws by the U.S. government to be met.
