Quebec Rap: Between Rapper's Practices and Listener's Representations

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the issue of Quebec rap and its particularities. By comparing substandart French in France and in Quebec, and the introduction of the main factors influencing the linguistic situation in this Canadian province tries to point out the way they are reflected in Quebec rap. The essential material was a questionnaire survey on a sample of 104 respondents, made in spring 2012 in Montreal, Quebec. Furthermore it is argued by samples from the linguistic corpus of 190 rap songs and from the transcripts of our interviews with 4 Quebec rappers. By using the questionnaire there were identified respondent’s views on Quebec rap in general and their particular attitudes to the influence of linguistic situation in Canada on this music style. In the theoretical part we present the studied environment and circumstances influencing the creation of rap in Quebec. The methodology describes each phase of the research and advantages and disadvantages of the chosen methods. In the practical part we present results of the rap listeners questionnaire, the results of corpus analysis and opinions of the Quebec rappers. The objective of this diploma thesis is to compare the real use of language in rap with views of respondents, who are often listeners of this music genre, on the topic of loanwords, codeswitching and other specifics

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou québeckého rapu a jeho partikularit. Srovnáním substandardní francouzštiny ve Francii a Québecu a představením hlavních faktorů ovlivňujících jazykovou situaci v této kanadské provincii se snaží poukázat na způsob, jakým se odrážejí v québeckém rapu. Základním materiálovým východiskem se stalo dotazníkové šetření na vzorku 104 respondentů provedené na jaře 2012 v québeckém Montrealu. Dále bylo argumentováno pomocí ukázek z jazykového korpusu 190 rapových písní a z přepisů našich rozhovorů se 4 québeckými rapery. Pomocí dotazníku byly zjištěny názory respondentů na québecký rap obecně i jejich konkrétní postoje k vlivu jazykové situace v Kanadě na tento hudební styl. V teoretické části se snažíme představit zkoumané prostředí a okolnosti ovlivňující rapovou tvorbu v Québecu. Metodologie popisuje jednotlivé fáze výzkumu a výhody a nevýhody použitých metod. V praktické části předkládáme výsledky dotazníkového šetření u poslouchačů rapu, výsledky korpusové analýzy a názory samotných québeckých raperů. Cílem této diplomové práce je porovnat reálné použití jazyka v rapu s názory respondentů, často i posluchačů tohoto hudebního žánru, na danou problematiku z hlediska výpůjček, střídání jazykových kódů a dalších specifik.
