Media Construction of Apocalypse: Halley's Comet and the End of Mayan Calendar from the Viewpoint of Discourse Analysis

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá tématem apokalyptických predikcí v médiích: způsobem jejich diskurzivní konstrukce a některými z funkcí, které mediální reprezentace apokalyptických vizí mohou plnit. Teoretický background tvoří vybrané koncepty Jungovy analytické psychologie, historický kontext apokalyptických vizí včetně současných historicko-sociologických teorií kolapsu, antropologické konceptualizace rituálu přechodu a koncept ontologického bezpečí, vztažený k mediální (apokalyptické) serialitě. Metodou výzkumu mediální reprezentace apokalypsy je diskurzivní analýza, jejíž popis konstrukce reality je prohlouben pomocí vybraných hlubinně psychologických kategorií. Výzkumný soubor tvoří mediální texty reprezentující dvě historické apokalyptické predikce, spojované s návratem Halleyovy komety v roce 1910 a s koncem mayského kalendáře v roce 2012. Kromě popisu diskurzů využívaných médii pro konstrukci apokalypsy diplomová práce dochází ke třem hlavním zjištěním. Za prvé, média mají potenciální schopnost pomocí rozmanitých forem ritualizace apokalyptické předpovědi symbolicky revitalizovat společnost a pracovat ve prospěch pocitu ontologického bezpečí. Za druhé, předměty, jichž se predikce týká – zde kometa a kalendář – mohou fungovat jako projekční objekty kolektivně nevědomých úzkostí, vycházejících z dobového politicko-sociálního či ekologického kontextu. Za třetí, sebedestruktivní sklony lidského druhu média konstruují jako historicky invariantní příčinu apokalypsy; téměř univerzální metodou oddálení konce světa se zdá být návrat lidské civilizace k dřívějším, „skutečným“ hodnotám.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with apocalyptic predictions in media, the way of their discoursive construction and some of the predictions´ potential functions. Theoretical background of the thesis consists of selected Jungian concepts and historical context of apocalyptic predicitions, including recent historical-sociological theories of collapse. In addition, the research is theoretically based on anthropological conceptualizations of the rite of passage and the concept of ontological security related to media (apocalyptic) seriality. Description of media construction of reality patterned on discourse analysis is deepened by selected analytically psychological cathegories. The research sample represents two distinct historical apocalyptic predictions, related to the Comet Halley´s return in 1910 and to the end of the Mayan Calendar in 2012. Besides description of the discourses employed in the media construction of apocalypse, the diploma thesis comes to three main conclusions. First, the media are potentially able to symbolically revitalize the society by ritualizing the apocalyptic prediction in different ways and to act for individual ontological security. Second, the objects of the prediction – i. e., the comet and the calendar – can serve as projection objects/screens of collectively unconscious anxieties, emerging from the polical, social or ecological problems of the day. Third, the self-destructive tendencies of the human species are seen as historically invariable cause of the apocalypse. The humanity´s return to the former „real“ values seems to be almost universal method of postponing the apocalypse.
