Teaching anxiety and self-efficacy in the career of secondary school teachers

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá trémou a self efficacy v průběhu kariéry učitelů na středních školách. Cílem výzkumu je zmapovat dané charakteristiky ve vybrané populaci a ověřit vztahy mezi nimi. Ve výzkumu byl využit dotazník KSAT (Kondáš) a vytvořili jsme překlad dotazníku TEBS Self (Dellinger et al.). Data byla získána od 675 respondentů z populace učitelů na středních školách (N = 557) a studentů učitelství pro střední školy (N = 118). Výsledky výzkumu ukázaly, že zejména studenti a začínající učitelé pociťují vyšší úroveň trémy než zkušenější kolegové. Mezi jednotlivými fázemi vývoje učitelů existují také rozdíly v self efficacy. Studenti učitelství a učitelé do 6 let praxe vykazovali nižší míru self-efficacy než učitelé s delší praxí; self-efficacy má viditelnou vzestupnou tendenci spolu s narůstajícími lety praxe učitelů. Zároveň existuje statisticky významný negativní vztah mezi trémou a self efficacy. Mezi muži a ženami není rozdíl v míře učitelské self-efficacy, ženy však vykazovaly vyšší míru trémy než muži.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis is focused on teaching anxiety and self-efficacy during secondary school teachers´ career. The goal of the research is to map these characteristics in our chosen population and to prove the relationships between them. We used the KSAT questionnaire by Kondáš and a translation of TEBS-Self questionnaire (Dellinger et al.) was made for the purpose of our research. The data were collected from 675 respondents from the population of secondary school teachers (N = 557) and students of secondary school teaching (N = 118). The research results showed that especially students and beginner teachers experience higher levels of teaching anxiety than their more experienced colleagues. There are also differences in self-efficacy between the phases of teacher development. Students of secondary school teaching and teacher with maximum of 6 years of practice have shown lower levels of self efficacy than teachers with more practice. Self-efficacy has a visibly ascending tendency with the years of teaching. There is a statistically significant negative correlation between teaching anxiety and self-efficacy of teachers. Men and women do not differ in levels of teacher self efficacy. Nevertheless, women have shown higher levels of teaching anxiety than men.
