Project "unKnown" Identification of People on Portrait Photographs from the Photo Archive of the Jewish Museum in Prague

Abstract:

Ve sbírkách fotoarchivu Židovského muzea v Praze je uložen soubor zhruba 900 portrétních fotografií z let 1942-44, na nichž jsou zachyceni zaměstnanci Židovské obce v Praze a jejich rodinní příslušníci. Tato práce shrnuje východiska, postupy a výsledky projektu „neZnámí“ zabývajícího se identifikací neznámých osob na těchto fotografiích. Kromě práce s různými databázemi obětí holocaustu a archivními sbírkami je důležitou součástí projektu snaha oslovit pamětníky nebo i příslušníky mladších generací, kteří mohou pomoci s identifikací osob na fotografiích a zapojit se do projektu. Autor projektu po možných pamětních aktivně pátral, v další fázi projekt zveřejnil a medializoval. V rámci projektu bylo prozatím různými postupy identifikováno 40 osob. Tato práce uvádí jejich základní životopisné údaje a způsob, jakým byla jejich totožnost dopátrána.

Abstract:

Almost 900 photographs from 1942-1944 portraying staff of the Jewish community in Prague and their family members are kept in the photo archive of the Jewish Museum in Prague. This thesis summarises and describes hypotheses, methods and findings of the „unKnown“ project, whose aim is to identify unknown persons on these photographs. While working with various holocaust victims databases and archival records, it was vital in the project to contact possible witnesses as well as members of younger generations who could help to identify people in the photographs and take an active part in the project. Author of the project searched for the witnesses, later he displayed the photographs in public and published the project in media. Up to date 40 persons were identified through this project. This thesis summarises their basic biographical data and the methods of the identification.
