Gender in Curriculum Standards for Social Studies

Abstract:

Diplomovou prací je upozorněno na nerovnosti mezi chlapci a dívkami, původu genderu a jeho vlivu na vzdělávání. Diplomová práce je zaměřena na gender ve výuce občanské výchovy. Cílem této diplomové práce je zjistit postoj žáků a žákyň k tradičnímu nazírání na ženské a mužské role a nerovnosti mezi dívkami a chlapci. V teoretické části jsou vysvětleny základní pojmy týkající se genderu a současně odlišeny pojmy gender a pohlaví. Poté je popsáno postavení žen v jednotlivých historických obdobích ve společnosti. Pro vznik genderové identity existuje v psychologii několik přístupů, které jsou zde vymezeny. Zaměřujeme se na stále přetrvávající model dělby práce v rodině, kdy starost o domácnost a děti obstarává žena. Nezbytnou součástí teoretické části je kapitola, kde se zabýváme kurikulem a historií občanské výchovy, a také vlivem genderu na vzdělávání, nerovné přístupy vyučujících k dívkám a chlapcům a aby učitelé a učitelky nebyli vůči žákům a žákyním pod vlivem genderových stereotypů. Cílem kvantitativního výzkumu s využitím dotazníku v praktické části práce bylo zjištění, co si dívky a chlapci myslí o vzájemných úspěších, jak smýšlejí o rozdělení genderových rolí ve třídě a zda považují podmínky pro dívky a chlapce ve škole za rovnocenné. Diplomovou prací chceme přispět nejen k poznání tohoto problému, ale poukázat na používané, neuvědomělé stereotypy, pochopit genderové role, a nastínit možnosti, jak odstranit předsudky a odbourat zbytečné návyky.

Abstract:

My thesis is focused on the inequality between boys and girls, the origin of gender and its effects on education. The gender inequality is highlighted in the connection with the school subject of Social Studies. The main aim of the thesis is to find out the students? attitudes towards the traditional male and female roles and the inequalities between boys and girls. The basic concepts of gender and the difference between gender and sex are introduced in the theoretical part. First, the social role of women throughout history is described. Secondly, several social psychological approaches to the gender are outlined. The conventional gender roles that assign most domestic chores to the female partner is pointed out. The next chapter is devoted to the curriculum standards for Social Studies, the history of Social Studies and the effects of gender on education, inequal treating boys and girls and teachers? gender stereotypes. The practical part analyzes quantitative data collected from the girls and boys of different age and from different schools. The results of the survey reveal the attitudes of the girls and boys towards their achievements, gender based assignment of the roles in the classroom and their perception of the equality or inequality in the school. My thesis aims to bring a positive contribution not only to the deeper insight to this phenomenon, but it also focuses on the unconscious tendency to stereotypes, better understanding of gender roles, breaking down prejudices and elimination of useless habits.
