Intelligibility of the Geordie Dialect

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá dialektem Geordie a jeho srozumitelností pro studenty s pokročilou úrovní angličtiny. Dialekt Geordie byl vybrán pro svou rozdílnost od toho, co jsou studenti vyučování a co obecně považují za standardní angličtinu. V teoretické části se práce věnuje historii dialektu a termínu "Geordie" jako takovému. Dále popisuje jeho charakteristické zvuky, gramatiku, slovní zásobu a intonaci. Mnohé z jevů popsaných v teoretické části se vyskytují i v praktické části, ve které je hodnocena schopnost studentů porozumět dialektu Geordie. V rámci bakalářské práce byla požádána skupina studentů angličtiny z Filozofické fakulty Masarykovy univerzity v Brně, aby odpověděla na otázky, přičemž jim byla pouštěna nahrávka dvou rozdílných Geordie mluvčích.

Abstract:

This thesis is concerned with the Geordie dialect and its intelligibility for advanced students of English. The Geordie dialect was chosen for it is very different from what the students are taught and what they commonly perceive as the English standard. In the theoretical part, it examines the history of the dialect as well as the term “Geordie” as such. A description of its distinctive sounds, grammar, vocabulary and intonation is given as well. Many of the features demonstrated in the theoretical part occur in the practical part in which students abilities to understand the Geordie dialect are assessed. As a part of the thesis, a group of students of English at the Faculty of Arts at Masaryk University in Brno was chosen to answer questions while a recording was played to them.
