German Influence in Early Translations from English to Czech

Abstract:

Tato magisterská práce se zabývá problematikou nepřímého překladu v českých zemích ve druhé polovině 19. století. Úkolem bylo zaměřit se na analýzu několika překladů téhož díla z angličtiny do češtiny, dále připomenout některé důležité kontextuální okolnosti a za pomoci sekundární literatury doložit přetrvávající vliv němčiny na češtinu. Práce se orientuje na text Frances Hodgson Burnettové – Malý Lord. Překlady vybrané k porovnání pocházejí ze stejného časového období od r. 1902 do r. 1912, jejich autory jsou osobnosti s různými kompetencemi a odlišnou jazykovou výbavou: Eliška Krásnohorská, Václav Alois Jung, František Josef Andrlík a Jan Dlouhý. Ve srovnávací analýze autorka využila dvou německých překladů z r. 1888 a [1887-1890]: Emmy Becher a L. Koch. V případě překladu F. J Andrlíka byla prokázána přímá vazba na německý překlad L. Kocha. U Jana Dlouhého byl jeho volný překlad označen za adaptaci a zároveň byly v tomto textu identifikovány nápadné podobnosti s překladem V. A. Junga, což nevylučuje možnost, že se jedná o kompilaci z několika různých překladů.

Abstract:

This Master’s Diploma Thesis deals with the issue of indirect (second-hand) translation in the Czech lands in the second half of the 19th century. It focuses on the analysis of several translations of the same book from English to Czech and describes some important contextual circumstances. The aim was to provide evidence of the persisting influence of German on the Czech language with the support of secondary literature. The work is oriented on the text by Frances Hodgson Burnett–Little Lord Fauntleroy. The translations which were chosen for comparison come from the same time period–from 1902 to 1912 and their authors are personalities with different competences and language skills: Eliška Krásnohorská, Václav Alois Jung, František Josef Andrlík and Jan Dlouhý. In the comparative analysis, the author has used two German translations from 1888 and [1887-1890]: Emmy Becher a L. Koch. The analysis proved a direct connection to a German translation by L. Koch only in the case of F. J. Andrlík. In addition, Jan Dlouhý’s free translation was marked as an adaptation and there were also identified prominent similarities with the text of V. A Jung which does not exclude the possibility that it could be a compilation of several different translations
